ULL’s Long earns weekly hoops honors

After helping the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns to a two-game sweep through the state of Texas last week, Shawn Long swept a trio of awards Monday as he was named for the third time this season as the Sun Belt Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week.
Long, a 6-foot-9 forward, also picked up honors for the second time from the Louisiana Sports Writers Association as he was named the state’s Men’s College Basketball Player-of-the-Week and College Sports Madness, which named him the Madness Sun Belt Men’s Basketball Player of the Week.
The Morgan City native posted one of his best weeks of the season, helping the Ragin’ Cajuns (15-9, 6-5 SBC) claim road games at Sun Belt Conference opponents UT Arlington and Texas State
Long scored a career-high 31 points, going 11-for-17 from the field, in a 92-89 win at UTA on Thursday.
He came back to record his 13th double-double of the season (and 31st in 56 career games), scoring a game-high 20 points with 13 rebounds in a 67-66 victory at Texas State Saturday
The second-leading scorer in the Sun Belt Conference (20.3 ppg.) and league-leader in rebounds (10.9) and blocked shots (2.9), Long has scored 30 or more points twice in 2013-14 with a dozen 20-point efforts.
