Fire chief: Grease fire destroys Bayou Vista house

BAYOU VISTA — A fire that appears to have started in the kitchen of a residence on Fangue Lane destroyed the residence, and caused several firefighters to be treated for injuries, Bayou Vista Fire Chief Ricky Roberts said.

Firefighters responded to a fire in the 600 block of Fangue Lane around 7 p.m. Tuesday, Roberts said.

Firefighters on the first fire truck on the scene only saw smoke, he said. However, as firefighters got on the roof to ventilate the residence, flames blew through the top of the roof and collapsed the backside of the residence, Roberts said.

One firefighter was taken to the hospital after he got hit by a piece of falling debris, he said. He was released from the hospital Tuesday night, Roberts said. 

Two other firefighters were treated on scene, he said. One was treated for dehydration and one for exhaustion, he said.

All occupants of the residence escaped uninjured, Roberts said. The damage to the residence is probably a total loss, he said. 

The initial investigation shows that the fire started in the kitchen, and was possibly a grease fire, Roberts said. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The Bayou Vista Volunteer Fire Department responded with two pumper trucks, a ladder truck and a rescue truck, Roberts said. 

Firefighters cleared the scene by 1 a.m. today. 

The Berwick Volunteer Fire Department also responded to the fire.
