Berwick falls in season opener

Lafayette Christian used a 25-8 run during the second and third quarters to pull away from Berwick for a 39-22 victory in the Lady Panthers’ season opener Monday.
While Lafayette Christian led just 3-2 after the first period, it outscored Berwick 15-4 in the second period and 10-4 in the third period for a 28-10 lead after three quarters.
Berwick held a 12-11 scoring edge in the final period.
Aija Robinson led the Lady Panthers with 13 points, while McKenzie Baumgartner had four points; Mickenzie Reed had three; and Brittany Boudreaux, two.
Berwick will return to action today when the squad, along with the boys’ team, heads to Grand Isle for a nondistrict contest beginning with junior varsity boys’ action beginning at 5 p.m. and varsity girls’ and boys’ action to follow at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Elsewhere, the Morgan City girls’ basketball team will begin its season today when it hosts West St. Mary. Girls’ action is set for 6:30 p.m.
Patterson girls also will begin their season today when it travels to Lutcher for a 6 p.m. contest.
