Central Catholic will look to continue its best start since the 2010 season when the squad travels to face Centerville High School Friday.
The Eagles, who are 4-0 and 1-0 in District 7-1A action, are off to their best start since opening the season 6-0 en route to a 9-1 regular season in 2010.
A week ago, the squad dominated Lafayette Christian in both teams’ District 7-1A opener as the Eagles won the game 50-20.
Central Catholic coach Tommy Minton said he was pleased with the way the team has started its season.
“Anytime you’ve played four and you’ve won four, you should be happy, and the thing that makes me the happiest, though, is the fact that we’re making progress in the areas we need to improve in,” Minton said. “To me, a football season’s not a sprint. It’s a marathon, and you got to pace yourself for the long haul, and hopefully, you keep getting better each week.”
Minton said his team can’t be “stagnant and rest on last week’s performance."
Central Catholic totaled 399 yards of total offense in the win, including 305 rushing.
Stefano Guarisco led the ground game with 29 carries for 215 yards and 4 touchdowns. Sydney Holder also rushed for 2 scores, while Chris Singleton added another.
Through the air, quarterback Blake Byrne completed 4-of-7 passes for 66 yards with 1 interception, while Greg Leger led the team’s receivers with 2 catches for 70 yards.
Defensively, the Eagles rebounded from a tough outing against Ascension Catholic in Week 3 as they limited Lafayette Christian to just 152 yards of offense, including just 61 rushing.
This season, Guarisco has rushed 111 times for 907 yards and 13 touchdowns. Byrne, who leads the team in passing, has completed 19-of-34 passes for 347 yards, 4 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.
Leger leads the team’s receivers with 6 catches for 177 yards and 1 touchdown; Jalen Johnson has 6 catches for 128 yards and 2 touchdowns; and Guarisco has 5 catches for 103 yards and 2 touchdowns.
This week, the Eagles will face district newcomer Centerville High School, which is playing its first year of varsity football.
The squad started the season 3-0 before dropping its first game of the season a week ago to Gueydan, 21-14, in both teams’ District 7-1A opener.
“Anytime it’s your first time in varsity competition and you can start it on a positive like that, you got to feel really good about yourself,” Minton said.
Minton said the Centerville football team has received excellent support from its community.
“It’s a road game, a district game, and I don’t care if they’ve played football for one year or 25 years, you look at film and you see a football program that’s doing a lot of good things, and we got to be ready to play football,” Minton said.
Offensively, Minton said Centerville features a lot of spread schemes.
Defensively, Minton said his squad must line up correctly with what they will be facing on offense.
“I think we have some good matchups up front,” Minton said. “If we line up correctly, we can control the line of scrimmage and do some things to hurt ’em. But we have to get lined up to all their different sets first.”
Defensively, Minton said the Bulldogs use a five-man front.
“That’s a strength of theirs,” he said. “With us being a running team, they (are) going to try to take the run game away from us with Stefano, naturally, and we have to be prepared for a physical game upfront.”
