Central Catholic softball falls in eight innings

Catholic High-New Iberia scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to better a Central Catholic performance in the top half of the frame and defeat the Lady Eagles in eight innings, 7-6.
While both teams entered extra innings tied at four, Central Catholic plated two runs in the top of the frame for a 6-4 lead before Catholic High-New Iberia plated three in the bottom of the frame.
Bridgette Swan suffered the loss in relief. In 1.2 innings of relief, she surrendered three runs — one earned — on a hit with three walks and fanned two.
Brittany Longman earned a no-decision. In 6.1 innings, she surrendered four runs — two earned — on nine hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
Of the seven runs Central Catholic surrendered, four were unearned.
Central Catholic and Catholic High each plated a run in the first inning, while Catholic High added a run in the fourth for a 2-1 advantage. Central Catholic took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth before Catholic High tied it in the bottom of the sixth. Each team plated a run in the seventh inning.
Swan led the Lady Eagles at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance with two RBIs and two runs, while Kimberly Russo was 3-for-5 with two runs and a stolen base. Other top contributors included Longman, 1-for-4, a double and two RBIs; and Kaitlyn Gros, 2-for-4, a stolen base and two runs.
Central Catholic (3-2) will return to action Tuesday when it opens District 7-1A play with a 4 p.m. contest at Gueydan.
Berwick games
rescheduled
Two games for the Berwick Lady Panthers, scheduled to be played earlier this week, have been rescheduled for later this month.
The Lady Panthers’ contest at St. John of Plaquemine, which was scheduled for Thursday, was rained out and rescheduled for March 24 in Plaquemine at 4:30 p.m.
Wednesday’s home contest against Assumption was postponed and will be played March 19 in Berwick at 3:30 p.m.
Berwick (3-2) will continue its season in its Lady Panther Classic Saturday with games at 10 a.m. against Catholic High-New Iberia and noon against Teurlings Catholic.
Patterson’s game
rained out
The Patterson Lumberjills’ contest at White Caste, the opening game in the second annual Ned Stephens Memorial Tournament, was rained out.
Patterson (1-0) will continue play in the tournament today at Kemper Williams Park with a 7:30 p.m. contest against De La Salle.
