Central Catholic tops Morgan City

AMELIA — Central Catholic jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings en route to an 8-1 win against Morgan City in first-day action at the Sports Medicine Center of Thibodaux Regional Tiger/Cardinal Baseball Classic.
Central Catholic scored three runs apiece in the first two innings.
Morgan City scored a run in the top of the fourth inning while Central Catholic plated two more in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Samuel Guarisco earned the win for the Eagles. In seven innings, he surrendered an earned run on six hits with two walks and fanned three.
Stefano Guarisco led the Eagles with a 3-for-4 performance with a double, a triple, an RBI and three runs, while Samuel Guarisco was 2-for-3 with two doubles, an RBI and a run. Other top contributors included Bryson Barbier, 2-for-4, two RBIs and a stolen base; Barron Courtney, 1-for-4, an RBI and two runs; Sage Thibodaux, 1-for-3, a double; and Matthew Barbier, two RBIs.
Nick Spinella took the loss for Morgan City. In six innings, he surrendered eight runs — three earned — on nine highs with two walks and two strikeouts.
At the plate, Matt Lorenzo was 2-for-3 with a double, while Spinella also was 2-for-3 and Abram Hartley had an RBI.
Morgan City left seven runners on base, while Central Catholic stranded six.
The Tigers (4-5) will return to action today when it faces South Lafourche in a 4 p.m. contest at E.D. White, while Morgan City will conclude the tournament Saturday with a 12:30 p.m. contest against Livonia, also at E.D. White.
Central Catholic (9-2) will continue tournament play today when it faces Assumption at 4 p.m., while on Saturday, the Eagles will play H.L. Bourgeois at 2 p.m. at Terrebonne.
Berwick splits games at
CHNI tourney
The Berwick Panthers split their games Thursday at Catholic High-New Iberia’s tournament, falling 8-7 to Mamou in their opener before bouncing back with a 7-2 victory against Catholic High-New Iberia.
Against Mamou, Berwick took as much as a 6-2 lead in the top of the fourth before Mamou rallied with two runs in the bottom of the frame and two more each in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings.
In the loss, Berwick outhit Mamou 13-9, but Berwick assistant coach Lud Henry said the team’s two unearned runs were costly.
The Panthers also left 11 runners on base.
Andrew Askew suffered the loss in relief. In two innings, he surrendered four runs — three earned — on three hits with two walks, one hit batter and three strikeouts.
Starter Tim Shelby received a no-decision. In 3.2 innings he surrendered four runs — three earned — on six hits with three walks and fanned one.
Offensively, Bobby Boudreaux led the Panthers with a 3-for-4 performance with two RBIs, while Nick Duthu was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Other top contributors were Daniel Gray, 2-for-4, a double and an RBI; Brandon Fryou, 1-for-3 and an RBI; and Justin Morvant, 1-for-5, a double and an RBI.
In the Panthers’ win against Catholic High, Berwick outhit the host team 13-4, while Catholic High committed five errors to Berwick’s single miscue.
Berwick started the scoring early with four runs in the first and two more in the fourth for a 6-0 lead. Catholic High plated a run in the bottom of the sixth, and each team scored a run in the seventh inning.
Nick Duthu earned the win for Berwick. In seven innings, he surrendered two runs — one earned — on four hits with two walks, three hit batters and 12 strikeouts.
Brooks Richard and Morvant each led Berwick with 4-for-5 performances, while Daniel Gray was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, Chet Aucoin, 2-for-3; Duthu, two RBIs; and Boudreaux, an RBI.
Berwick again struggled with runners on the base paths as they left 14 runners on base.
Berwick (9-5) will return to action today at 5 p.m. when it faces Mamou again.
