Lumberjacks win two

Staff Report
Patterson finished the weekend 2-1 at St. Martinville’s tournament with its only blemish being a two-overtime loss to New Iberia Friday.
After falling 50-48 to New Iberia, Patterson responded with a 61-49 win against St. Martinville Saturday and a 40-37 win against Edna Karr Sunday in the fifth-place game.
“This was a good weekend for us,” Patterson head coach Ryan Taylor said. “We played some tough teams that made us better. The Karr game may have been one of our best defensive games since I have been at Patterson. They were so much bigger than us but my guys battled and played hard. I have to give the guys all the credit. We didn’t play well on Saturday, but the guys responded and won a big game for us Sunday.”
Against Karr, Patterson jumped out to a 14-8 lead after the first quarter and led 21-16 at halftime and 32-29 after three quarters.
Daylon Charlot led Patterson with 11 points, while other top scorers included Nehemiah Augustus, nine; Larry Turner, seven; Taylan Grogan, six; Dontrell Benjamin, four; and Kenneth Washington, three.
Against St. Martinville, Patterson led 19-17 after the first quarter, 37-28 at halftime and 42-37 after three quarters.
Augustus and Benjamin each reached double figures with 19 and 13 points, respectively, while DJ Jones and Grogan scored eight apiece; Jedrick Gunner, seven; and Charlot, four.
Against New Iberia, both teams were tied at 12 after the first quarter, while New Iberia took a 20-16 lead at halftime.
Patterson rallied in the third quarter to take a 28-25 lead after three quarters before New Iberia responded with a 13-10 scoring margin in the fourth to tie the game at 38 and force overtime.
In the first overtime, each team scored six points, while New Iberia outscored Patterson 6-4 in the second overtime for the win.
The loss was Patterson’s first this season.
“I am proud of the way we battled for the entire game,” Taylor said. “We just had too many breakdowns, both offensively and defensively, to pull out the win.”
Gunner and Augustus each scored 11 for Patterson, while Benjamin scored 10.
Other top scorers included Turner, nine; and Grogan, five.
Patterson (6-1) will return to the court Friday when it hosts Assumption.
