MCHS defeats West St. Mary 54-35

Morgan City High School defeated West St. Mary 54-35 in opening round action Monday at Morgan City High School’s Tiger Classic.
The Tigers took a 6-4 lead after the first quarter, led 22-17 at the half, and 40-30 after three quarters.
Taaj Daniels led Morgan City with 17 points, while Cedric Gant and Lloyd Singleton each scored 10.
Other scorers included Kerwin Francois, seven points; Ke’sean Francois, five points; Tywan Walker, three points; and Makye Richard, two points.
While Morgan City was scheduled to play Ascension Catholic Monday evening, Morgan City coach Robert Lee said the Bulldogs had withdrawn from the tournament.
Now, the Tigers will face South Terrebonne, who defeated Grace King in other first-round action Monday, today at 8 p.m.
In other first-round action, Thibodaux defeated David Thibodaux, while Central Lafourche topped Lafayette.
This past weekend, Morgan City participated in Grace King’s tournament where the Tigers finished 2-1.
After dropping its opener to McDonogh 35, Morgan City rebounded with wins against Covington and South Terrebonne.
Against McDonogh 35, Morgan City fell 75-59.
While Morgan City took a 21-8 lead after a quarter, McDonogh 35 came roaring back, outscoring Morgan City 23-6 in the second quarter for a 31-27 halftime advantage.
The New Orleans-based school extended its lead to 64-44 after three quarters.
Daniels led Morgan City with 16 points, including four three-pointers.
Other top contributors included Richard, 15 points; Gant, 11 points; Ke’sean Francois and Walker, each six points; and Singleton, four points.
Against Covington, the Tigers won 73-54
Morgan City led 17-5 after the first quarter, 43-13 at the half, and 59-36 after three quarters.
Lloyd Singleton led four Morgan City players in double figures with 17 points.
Other contributors included Ke’sean Francois, 14 points; Walker, 12 points; Gant, 11 points; Richard, seven points; Daniels and Abram Hartley, five points apiece; and Kerwin Francois, two points.
Morgan City concluded the tournament with a 63-31 victory against South Terrebonne.
Morgan City led 17-5 after a quarter, 31-14 at the half, and 52-21 after three quarters.
The Tigers had eight three-pointers in the win.
Richard led the Tigers with 26 points.
Other contributors included Singleton, eight points; Daniels, seven points; Gant and Kerwin Francois, six points each; Ke’sean Francois, five points; Walker, three points; and Hartley, two points.
Berwick wins opener
The Berwick Panthers started their season with a 68-37 rout of Hanson Memorial Monday at Ascension Episcopal’s tournament.
Audwin Williams and Larenz Clark each had 15 points to lead the Panthers.
Other top contributors included Cody Roberie and Kenan Jones, each nine points; Silton Span and Donald Tillman, six points apiece; and Travis Whitehead, five points.
Berwick (1-0) will return to action today when it continues tournament play with a 6 p.m. contest against Catholic High-New Iberia.
