Patterson, Berwick win two games this weekend

Staff Report

Patterson High School won two of three games this weekend with the last of the three being rained out.
On Friday, Patterson topped Baker 12-1 in six innings in a makeup game, while on Saturday at Ascension Episcopal’s tournament, the Lumberjacks defeated Port Barre 5-2 before their finale against False River was stopped in the first inning with Patterson ahead 3-0.
Against Baker, Patterson pitcher Sirbatian Charles earned the win with a two-hitter. In five innings, he surrendered one earned run and fanned six.
Patterson scored five runs in the first and two more in the second.
While Baker scored its lone run in the bottom of the fourth, Patterson plated five runs in the fifth.
Patterson had nine hits, four of those doubles.
“We jumped on them early and really never were threatened,” Patterson head coach Ryan Jensen said. “Sirbatian was dominant and only allowed those (two) hits in the (fourth). I was glad to see us put someone away when we had the opportunity.”
Offensively, Patterson had nine hits, four of those doubles.
Joel Singleton led Patterson with a 2-for-4 performance with two doubles, an RBI, two runs and two stolen bases.
Other top hitters for Patterson included Jamey Fabre, 2-for-3, an RBI, a run and two stolen bases; Brad Beaubouef, 1-for-3, a double and four RBIs; and Tyrik Singleton, 1-for-4, a double, two RBIs and two runs
Patterson left eight runners on base in the win, while Baker committed seven errors.
Against Port Barre, Patterson didn’t pull ahead for good until the sixth inning with a run to break a 2-all game.
The Lumberjacks added two more runs in the top of the seventh.
Kenny Singleton earned the win for Patterson as he tossed a three-hitter. In seven innings, he surrendered two runs — one earned — on three hits with one walk and eight strikeouts.
“It was a good win in a tight game,” Jensen said. “Kenny did a great job on the mound and really deserved to win the game. I think our experience Monday night against Pine Prairie, as frustrating as it was then, helped us in this game. We have to keep improving and understanding that we still have a long ways to go before we are ready to compete with the teams in our district.”
Early on, each team scored a run in the second inning, and Patterson plated another run in the top of the third.
However, Port Barre tied the game in the bottom of the fourth.
Offensively, Brennen Gouaux led Patterson with a 3-for-4 performance with an RBI, two stolen bases and a run.
Other top contributors included Joel Singleton, who led Patterson with a 2-for-3 performance with two RBIs, a run and a stolen base; Fabre, 2-for-4, two runs; and Beaubouef, 1-for-2, an RBI and two stolen bases.
Against False River, Jensen said pitcher Joel Singleton retired the side in the top of the first, his team came out “aggressive” in the bottom of the inning as Fabre doubled, Kenny Singleton walked, Gouaux reached when his sacrifice bunt was mishandled and Tyrik Singleton tripled over the right fielder’s head, plating three runs.
Joel Singleton also was hit by a pitch in the win.
“The rain had really started to come down pretty hard, and they decided to stop the game,” Jensen said. “I asked to wait it out, but they didn’t think it would end anytime soon, so they sent us home.”
While the False River game won’t count, Jensen and his team will get to play a second game in the tournament as they will meet Highland Baptist today at Highland Baptist.
“Hopefully, we can pick up where we left off and keep getting better as a team,” Jensen said. “This group is showing signs of maybe settling in to a decent club, and I want that positivity to keep building.”
