Patterson blows out Berwick

It’s homecoming and we got a chance to get a lot of kids in the game and that’s always a good thing.

The Patterson Lumberjacks celebrated homecoming in style, rolling over Berwick 57-7 at the Sugar Dome Friday.
Patterson (7-2, 3-0 District 9-3A) won its seventh straight game after starting the season 0-2. The win sets up a showdown with Franklin (6-3, 3-0) Friday at home for the district championship.
The Hornets survived with a 44-42 win against Donaldsonville Friday.
In their most recent game, Patterson was shocked by Berwick (2-7, 0-3) with an onside kick to open the game.
However, the Panthers’ trickery was short lived, as Berwick quarterback Jeremy Boudreaux’s fourth-down pass was intercepted by Joe Duffie.
Boudreaux was starting in place of Bobby Boudreaux, who was sidelined with an injury. Bobby Boudreaux is the team’s leading passer and rusher.
Patterson wasted little time capitalizing on the Berwick turnover. Quarterback Spencer Landry capped a four-play, 35-yard drive with a 4-yard touchdown run with 8:38 remaining in the first quarter.
After Patterson’s defense forced one of its five three-and-outs, Landry was intercepted by Tre Matthews, who raced 50-yards for the Panthers only score of the game.
“We were so overmatched,” Berwick head coach Craig Brodie said. “We tried to jump on them with the onside kick and Tre made a great play on the interception, but they had just too much firepower.”
Patterson’s offense found its groove and scored on the next four possessions before halftime.
“We did a lot of good things but we had a turnover early that led to points for them and I don’t like to see that but we made some big plays,” Patterson head coach Tommy Minton said.
Landry was 5-of-6 passing for 182 yards with two touchdowns and an interception in limited action. The senior has completed 148-of-244 passes for 2,508 yards with 30 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
Berwick’s quarterback woes deepened when Jeremy Boudreaux was injured in the second quarter and Drew Landry was forced under center for the Panthers.
Landry had the team’s only completion, a 28-yarder to Audwin Williams.
“We had several players get hurt, but the kids played hard and I was happy with the effort,” Brodie said.
Patterson pounded Berwick on the ground after getting a big lead.
The ’Jacks totaled a season-high 245-yards rushing. Deontay Jones had six carries for 87 and a score to lead the Patterson rushers.
Standout receiver Daylon Charlot had a 66-yard touchdown run, and he had two catches for 121, including a 97-yard touchdown reception just before halftime.
Patterson’s backups manned the second-half.
“It’s homecoming and we got a chance to get a lot of kids in the game and that’s always a good thing,” Minton said.
Patterson now turns its attention to longtime rival Franklin, who edged the ’Jacks in the jamboree.
“If you want to win a district championship, all you have to do is win the game,” Minton said. “We shouldn’t have any problem getting them motivated this week.”
Berwick will conclude its season Friday with a home matchup against E.D. White in District 9-3A play.
