Trio of MCHS Tigers net all-state recognition

Staff Report

Three Morgan City Tiger baseball players earned Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class 4A All-State honorable mention honors.
Seniors Philip Hutchinson and Rhett Fryou and sophomore Morrquise Charles earned the honor.
Hutchinson, a first-team All-District 7-4A catcher and Huntingdon College signee, finished his senior season with a .427 batting average. He had five doubles and 15 RBIs along with a .557 on-base percentage and a .502 slugging percentage.
Defensively, he threw out 31 runners and had one save on the mound.
“I thought he had a real good season,” Morgan City coach Barret Rey said. “He was very consistent.”
Rey noted one thing that is not seen in the stats is he threw out 31 runners from his catcher position.
Offensively, Rey said Hutchinson provided them with the big hit or got on base when they needed it.
“He answered every call that we needed this year,” he said.
Fryou, a first-team all-district selection at pitcher, finished the season with a 6-3 record with a 2.11 ERA. In 60 innings, he walked 11 and fanned 41.
“He’s just a real ironman,” Rey said. “Anything we needed a win, he got us the win. He allowed us not to have any long losing streaks … The most tremendous thing about him is we found out after the season that about 80 percent of the district season, he pitched with a broken foot.”
Charles, a first-team all-district selection at utility, batted .353 this season with multiple doubles and one triple. He had 16 RBIs, a .614 on-base percentage, a .439 slugging percentage, and he was 12-for-12 in stolen base.
Rey said Charles has talent to improve his offensive production even more.
“If Morrquise ever gets consistent with it, he could really take off with this and go to another level,” he said.
District 7-4A had one player make the all-state first team, Logan Soulet of South Terrebonne. Other honorable mention selections included South Terrebonne’s Connor Brunet and Blake Freeman; South Lafourche’s Alec Danos and Blake Ougel; Vandebilt Catholic’s Kye Matherne, Parker Boudreaux, David Yancey and Kane Degruise; and Ellender’s Channing Halloway.
