First Cousins Cajun and Creole music documentary viewing set

The Jeanerette Museum will present a free viewing of the documentary, “First Cousins: Cajun and Creole Music in South Louisiana,” at 6 p.m. March 22.
This film explores the musical heritage of the region’s French-speaking people who have shared tunes, borrowed instruments and danced in each other’s arms for generations, according to the museum’s news release.
In the documentary, some of the region’s most beloved musicians reveal the passion they share for making music and carrying on family traditions. With roots reaching all the way back to Africa, Europe and French Canada over the past three centuries, the solid trunk of Louisiana’s Creole and Cajun music has flourished into a family tree with intertwined branches.
Moriah Istre, Ph.D., will introduce the film and lead a brief discussion on its making. Istre is a multilingual folklorist, cultural festival programmer and independent filmmaker. Istre embraces the arts and enjoys opportunities to celebrate her Cajun and Creole heritage.
The museum is located at 500 E. Main St. The film is suitable for an adult audience. Seating may be limited and taken on a first-come, first-served basis. For information, visit the museum’s website at www.jeanerettemuseum.com or email jeanerettemuseum@yahoo.com or call the museum at 337-276-4408 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays.
