Birthday and anniversary celebrants were recognized during the July 11 St. Mary AARP meeting.

St. Mary AARP hears from the new generation

St. Mary Parish AARP held its monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. on July 11 at the St. Mary Senior Citizens Center in Morgan City.
Prior to the meeting, Hubert Francis entertained members and guests with dance music from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., followed by bingo until 6:30 p.m.
The meeting and meal sponsor for July was DSF Wealth Management of Morgan City. Attendees were served red beans with rice, sausage, green salad and birthday cake. The meal was prepared by Shirley and Floyd Hymel.
Shirley Ackers, former St. Martin Parish AARP chapter president, announced that a Senior Citizen Educational Seminar will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 29 at the Cypress Bayou Casino Hotel Pavilion in Charenton.
Guest speaker for the event will be Gov. John Bel Edwards. Lunch will be provided and a $10 casino credit will be added to attendees with player’s card.
The seminar is presented by District Attorney Bo Duhe’ and is sponsored by the casino. Reservations are required. Guest speakers for the St. Mary AARP meeting were Berwick High School students representing “The New Generation Group.” The group, comprised of young students, was formed to have the older generation help them prepare for the future and in turn, the group can help the older generation with the technologies of today.
The New Generation Group will sponsor its first meeting, “Crossing Generation Mixer,” at 6 p.m. Aug. 18 at the Berwick Civic Complex. Refreshments will be served. For details call Kimberly Vasquez at 985-384-8450.
St. Mary AARP President Bill Darce announced that 96 members and guests have signed up for the AARP-sponsored tour to Mackinac Island, Michigan, scheduled for August. A pre-departure meeting will be held at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 3 at the St. Mary Senior Citizens Center.
Darce also announced that the July Chapter Meal will be held at El Toro in Morgan City at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Tickets can be purchased at the St. Mary AARP office.
