St. Mary AARP holds March meeting

St. Mary AARP held it monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. March 7.
Meal co-sponsors were Urgent Care of Morgan City and Atchafalaya Obstetrics and Gynecology in Morgan City.
The 220 members attending were treated to a meal of white beans with rice and sausage prepared by the meal team of Shirley and Floyd Hymel. Dessert was provided by M C Bank.
Urgent Care representative Gabe Beadle, physicians assistant, congratulated St. Mary AARP for its outstanding community services and the public for its support of Urgent Care.
Member Riley Gros announced that a new Regional Military Museum opened in Houma. The museum is located at 1154 Barrow St. and is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. For information about the museum call 985-873-8200.
St. Mary AARP President Bill Darce reminded members about the need for volunteers. The AARP chapter provides many activities for members and the community but needs more volunteers to help the goals to become a reality.
Darce said he encouraged new members to join the local chapter and become an “AARP volunteer … we need your help, too.”
The current membership drive started in January. Membership is good through December 2018. For membership information call the St. Mary AARP office at 985-384-2277 between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays or Fridays. Membership dues are $12 per person.
In other AARP news:
—Darce announced three AARP sponsored tours for 2016. An August trip to Mackinac Island, Michigan; a Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, show trip in October; and a Branson, Missouri, Christmas trip in November. These tours are open to the public. Call for details.
—The next AARP meeting will be April 4 at the St. Mary Senior Citizens Center on Chennault Street in Morgan City. Activities begin at 4:30 p.m. A meal of beef stew with rice will be served at 6:30 p.m.
