Beau Chene defeats Tigers

Staff Report

In a battle of top three teams in the latest unofficial Louisiana High School Athletic Association Division II power rankings, Beau Chene got the best of Morgan City with a 5-0 win in boys’ soccer action Tuesday.
In the first half, the game was back and forth with both teams having opportunities, Morgan City coach Trevor Patterson said.
Beau Chene, the No. 1 ranked team in Division II, took a 1-0 lead after scoring a goal in the 25th minute.
“The second half we came out strong and had numerous chances but couldn’t get it in,” Patterson said.
The Tigers, ranked No. 3 in Division II, had one goal in the second half that was called back due to a foul.
Beau Chene would score four goals in the second half, including one via penalty kick.
Despite the big margin of victory by Beau Chene, Patterson said the game wasn’t indicative of the score, noting four of Beau Chene’s goals were due to defensive mistakes by the Tigers. Those mistakes, Patterson said, can’t happen in future games.
“Up to this point, we were solid on the back line,” he said. “I don’t know if it was nerves or just the Gators’ style of play that caught us off guard.”
Beau Chene is ranked No. 3 in the latest Louisiana Soccer Coaches Association Division II poll, while Morgan City is the top vote-getter outside the top 10 with 53 points.
Morgan City (5-2-1) will return to action this weekend when it returns to tournament play in Lafayette.
Lady Tigers win
The Morgan City Lady Tigers defeated Beau Chene 4-1 Tuesday in Morgan City.
Morgan City erupted for four goals in the second half after starting slow in the initial half and entering halftime trailing 1-0.
Patterson noted Beau Chene had some talented players and some speed, which gave Morgan City’s defense trouble at times.
However, in the second half, Morgan City tied the game within the first 10 minutes via a goal by Sarah Patterson, while five minutes later, the Lady Tigers took the lead via a goal by Paige Comeaux with an assist from Patterson.
Later in the second half, Comeaux converted a cross to Lady Tigers’ newcomer Marki Rivere, who netted a goal to extend Morgan City’s advantage to 3-1.
Morgan City scored its final goal of the contest in the 70th minute when Comeaux converted a cross to Patterson who knocked it into the net.
“Patterson and Comeaux have been working great up top,” Coach Patterson said. “It’s been a long time since we had someone that had speed and could pass the ball. (It’s) something we have missed, and this combo is working out.”
The Lady Tigers (3-5-2) will return to action Thursday when they travel to face Episcopal School of Acadiana.
