Berwick sweeps rain-shortened parish relays

Berwick High School swept the abbreviated St. Mary Parish Championship Relays Friday at Giesler Stadium in Berwick.
The meet was halted with just a few events remaining when rain hit the area Friday night.
The only remaining events left to finish were the boys’ and girls’ 200-meter run, the 3,200-meter run and the 1,600-meter relay.
With scores tallied from what was completed, Berwick High won the boys team title with 137 points.
On the girls’ side, Berwick totaled 135 points for the title.
Berwick nearly swept the individual awards as Corrine Benandi and Nicole Arceneaux were named Field MVPs, while Berwick’s Kloey Cuvillier and Naishaylyn Brown of West St. Mary were track MVPs.
Berwick’s Ashton Morales was named Outstanding Performer.
Benandi finished first in the high jump, third in the long jump and second in the triple jump. On the track, she finished first in the 100 meter hurdles.
Arceneaux took first in the discus, second in the shot put and third in the javelin.
Brown won the 100 meter run and 400 meter dash, while Cuvillier took first in the 800 meter run and 1,600 meter run.
Meanwhile, Morales finished first in the long jump and triple jump, second in the high jump and fourth in the 300-meter hurdles.
On the boys’ side, Hanson’s Jeff Soulis was Field MVP, Central Catholic’s Sal Grizzaffi was Track MVP and Berwick’s Kenan Jones was named Outstanding Performer.
Soulis won the javelin event and finished second in the discus, while Grizzaffi won the 1,600 meter run and the 800 meter run.
Jones won the high jump, the long jump and the triple jump.
