Berwick tops North Vermilion, 61-58, in overtime in District 8-3A action

Berwick High School topped North Vermilion 61-58 in overtime in both teams’ District 8-3A finale Friday in Berwick.
Berwick outscored North Vermilion 10-7 in the extra period of play for the victory.
Donald Tillman came up big for the Panthers in the overtime period as he finished 4-for-4 from the line. Of his nine points, Tillman scored six in overtime.
While North Vermilion led 39-37 after three quarters, Berwick forced overtime after outscoring them 14-12 in the fourth quarter for a 51-all game.
The game was tied at 11 after the first quarter, and North Vermilion led 26-24 at the half.
Larenz Clark led Berwick with 12 points, while Audwin Williams also reached double figures with 10. Other scorers included Donald Tillman and Travis Whitehead, nine apiece; Josh Carver, six; Cody Roberie, five; Tysin Meads, four; and Silton Span, two.
Berwick (18-13 overall, 7-5 in District 8-3A) now will wait to see if it qualifies for the Class 3A postseason. Brackets will be released today.
Patterson finishes
district undefeated
The Patterson Lumberjacks finished District 8-3A play with an undefeated mark after routing Franklin, 74-44, in District 8-3A action Friday at Patterson.
Patterson, which finished 12-0 in district, captured its sixth consecutive district title earlier in the week.
“I am proud of this group,” Patterson head coach Ryan Taylor said. “A district championship is a goal every year. These guys battled and put themselves in the position they are in going into the playoffs. I am proud of the leadership of our seniors. They have played a lot of basketball for this program, and they have upheld the tradition of Lumberjack basketball that has been laid before them.”
In Friday’s game, Patterson outscored Franklin in every quarter except the fourth. The Lumberjacks led 22-12 after a quarter, 41-21 at the half and 61-31 after three quarters.
Taylan Grogan led Patterson with 26 points, while Jordan Butler also reached double figures with 12. Other scorers included D.J. Jones and Nehemiah Augustus, nine apiece; Drew Lucas, four; Dajon Richard and Tyric Garrett, three apiece; and James Butler, Khyri Harris and Irvin Celestine, two each.
Patterson, which finished the regular season with a 21-4 mark, now will await its postseason berth, which will be announced today. The Lumberjacks will be at home for the first round.
“They know the importance of every game,” Taylor said. “It is win or go home. I am confident these seniors will have everybody ready to play when the time comes.”
Ascension Episcopal
edges Central Catholic
Ascension Episcopal outscored Central Catholic 14-11 in the fourth quarter for a 35-34 victory in District 7-1A action in Youngsville Friday.
Central Catholic led 24-22 heading into the final period but couldn’t maintain its lead when the final horn sounded.
Ascension Episcopal led the Eagles 12-5 after a quarter, while Central Catholic responded with a 10-4 second quarter advantage to cut its deficit to 16-15 at the half.
Central Catholic connected on five three-pointers in the loss, four of those by Blake Byrne.
Jalen Johnson led the Eagles with 15 points, while Byrne also reached double figures with 12. Other scorers included Tanner Wiggins, five; and Brooks Thomas, three.
Central Catholic (11-14, 9-5) now will await its playoff opponent, which will be announced today. The Eagles will be on the road in the first round.
