Berwick's Theriot earns 1st-team all-state honors

Staff Report

Berwick and Patterson High schools combined for seven selections on the Louisiana Sports Writers’ Association Class 3A All-State team, led by Berwick High centerfielder Shannon Theriot.
In addition to Theriot, Berwick had three honorable mention selections, Rennen DeLatte, Shelby Bergeron and Jordan Lipari.
“I’m just glad for all these girls that they’re getting some recognition at the end of this year,” said Lloyd Burchfield, who retired as Berwick High’s softball coach at the end of this season. “We didn’t have such a great year, so to be represented by four people on the All-State team, I think, is a great accomplishment.”
Patterson had three honorable mention selections in Taylor Hall, Gaylen Grogan and Ashlyn Rock.
“I’m very proud of them,” Patterson High head coach Chasity Toups said. “I don’t believe that our softball program has ever had (three) girls honored at the same time on the state level. They have worked for everything they earned. I’m super excited to be getting two of the three back, with Ashlynn only being a sophomore next year. I’m looking for some great leadership qualities in Gaylen next year as well.”
Theriot, who has earned all-state recognition three out of her four years of high school — once in 4A as a freshman at Morgan City and back-to-back years at Berwick in 3A as a first-team selection her junior and senior years — finished the season with a .486 batting average.
“It’s well deserved,” Burchfield said Thursday. “Of course, Shannon’s a UL signee, and she (has) got all the tools to play at that kind of Division 1 program.”
Bergeron, who is headed to Louisiana College in Pineville to continue her playing career, batted .497 this season.
“She’s a blue collar softball player … gets everything she can out of what she’s got,” Burchfield said. “Just made herself into a real solid player, got the tools to succeed in college as well.”
DeLatte was a valuable pitcher for the Lady Panthers this season.
“She busted her butt for four years for me, and I don’t know what we’d have done without her this year … in the circle,” Burchfield said.
Lipari, Burchfield said, has potential to play on the next level.
“I think Jordan is a player that’s just a hard worker, and she’s kind of like Shelby — gets everything she can out of what she has,” Burchfield said.
No statistics were available Thursday for DeLatte and Lipari.
At Patterson, Hall, a senior, finished her season with a 9-14 mark. She had 199 strikeouts and 24 walks this season.
Rock, a freshman, batted .437, while Grogan, a junior, had a .428 batting average.
