CCHS pulls away from Berwick for win

Central Catholic used a fourth-quarter surge to secure a 47-34 victory against Berwick in Division 1 opening round action at Centerville’s Tournament of the Teche Thursday.
Early on, the score was tied at 10 after the first quarter and Central Catholic took a 22-17 lead into halftime.
Berwick cut the Central Catholic lead to 31-27 at the end of three quarters before Central Catholic outscored Berwick 16-7 in the final period for the win.
Jalen Johnson led Central Catholic with 16 points, while Samarick Paul and Stefano Guarisco each scored eight.
Others making the stat sheet for the Eagles were Matt Vorenkamp with seven and Tanner Wiggins with six.
Donald Tillman and Audwin Williams led Berwick with nine points apiece, while Kennan Jones scored six.
Other scorers for Berwick included Larenz Clark with four; and Cody Roberie, Dralyn West and Brandon Naverro with two points each.
Berwick (3-2) will play in the Division 1 consolation final Saturday at 4 p.m. against Centerville, a 59-28 loser to E.D. White in other action Thursday.
Central Catholic (1-0) will advance to the Division 1 championship game Saturday at 7 p.m. where it will face E.D. White.
Houma Christian pulls away from Lumberjills
Houma Christian outscored Patterson 31-14 in the second half to turn a 24-21 halftime lead into a comfortable 55-35 victory in Division 1 girls’ basketball action Thursday at Centerville’s Tournament of the Teche.
Coming out of halftime, Houma Christian outscored Patterson 12-7 in the third quarter to extend its lead to 36-28 before exploding for a 19-7 advantage in the final period for the final margin.
Patterson trailed just 12-11 after the first period.
Nakia Brooks led Patterson with 13 points, while Jazmin Evans scored nine.
Patterson (4-2) will play in Saturday’s Division 1 consolation game at 10 a.m. against Lafayette Christian, a 38-35 loser to H.L. Bourgeois in other Division 1 action Thursday.
Houma Christian will meet H.L. Bourgeois in Saturday’s Division 1 championship game, which is set for 1 p.m.
In today’s local action at the tournament, Morgan City will meet Central Catholic in girls’ action at 3:30 p.m., while Berwick will play Centerville at 5 p.m., both in Division 2 girls’ hoops action.
The losers of both games will meet in the Division 2 consolation game at 11:30 p.m., while the winners of both games will play at 2:30 p.m. in the Division 2 championship.
