Central Catholic scored 46 points on offense Thursday in its 46-6 victory against Hanson, but its defense was just as dominant.
For the third straight week, the Eagles turned in another solid performance on defense.
In Thursday’s contest, the Tigers were limited to just 100 yards of total offense (82 rushing and 18 passing).
“I think we are slowly and surely coming together,” Central Catholic Coach Tommy Minton said of his squad.
He noted that in the past two weeks, they have overcome key players being out.
“We’re playing such great team football, that it’s hard to lose when you do that,” Minton said. “The chemistry’s good, the guys are playing hard, and as long as we keep fitting into the right gaps on defense, and putting pressure on the quarterback and covering down, we’re going to be successful.”
Offensively, the Eagles put up solid numbers Thursday, too..
Central Catholic totaled 428 yards of offense (321 rushing and 107 passing).
Four different Eagles scored touchdowns as Chris Singleton rushed for three, Bailey Badeaux, two, Samarick Paul, one; and Ja’len Johnson caught another from quarterback Blake Byrne.
Singleton led the Eagles’ ground game with 18 carries for 191 yards and three touchdowns, while Badeaux contributed five carries for 75 yards and two scores.
Johnson led Central Catholic’s receivers with two catches for 84 yards and one touchdown.
Byrne completed 4 of 7 passes for 107 yards with one touchdown.
The Eagles scored touchdowns on six of eight offensive possessions Thursday, including their first three.
“Offensively, we’re doing enough good things, we’re scoring enough points and we’re moving the ball well enough that we can keep piling up some wins hopefully,” Minton said.
After stopping the Tigers and taking over at the Central Catholic 47, the Eagles needed just five plays to reach the end zone.
Two plays after Byrne connected with Paul on a third-down conversion to the Hanson 38, Badeaux took a handoff and raced to the end zone for a touchdown. The Eagles point-after-attempt was no good, but Central Catholic led 6-0 with 5:24 left in the first quarter.
The Eagles scored on their second possession via a Paul 21 yard run with 10:30 remaining in the second quarter, and then got the ball back at the Hanson 39 after a short kickoff.
Just three plays later, Badeaux crossed the goal line from two yards out. Drake Angeron’s kick was good for a 19-0 Central Catholic lead.
The big play on the touchdown drive was a 34-yard run by Singleton before a Hanson defender denied him the end zone with a tackle at the Tiger 2.
Hanson had its second-best drive of the game on its next possession as the Tigers moved the ball all the way from their 26 to the Central Catholic 1. However, on fourth down from the 1, Hanson quarterback Luke Lancon was stopped for no gain.
The Tigers made up for it on their next possession, though.
After regaining possession at the Central Catholic 16 following just a 13-yard punt by the Eagles, the Tigers scored on fourth down when Lancon connected with Jacob Srigley for a 13-yard touchdown pass with 1:44 remaining. The extra point, and the score remained 19-6.
While Hanson recovered a fumble by Johnson as he was being tackled on the kickoff return, they could not cash in on the turnover before halftime.
In the second half, the Eagles scored touchdowns on four of their five offensive possessions.
Singleton scored on a 41-yard run with 10:53 remaining in the third quarter, Byrne and Johnson hooked up for a 21-yard pass with 7:35 remaining in the third, Singleton scored on a 53-yard run with 6:15 remaining in the third and Singleton concluded his night with a 15-yard run on the first play of the fourth quarter for a 46-6 Central Catholic lead with 11:54 remaining.
Angeron was 3-for-3 on extra point attempts in the second half, while the Eagles’ attempt at a two point run on the first score in the second half was no good.
Central Catholic (5-3 overall, 3-1 in district) will return to action Oct. 27 when it hosts Gueydan for homecoming.
