CCHS upsets Patterson 45-35

Central Catholic outscored Patterson 21-8 in the third quarter on its way to a 45-35 upset win against Patterson.
While Patterson led 15-12 at the half, the Eagles outscored the Lumberjacks in the third quarter to take a 32-23 lead after three quarters.
Both teams scored 12 points apiece in the last quarter.
The win was a big one for the Eagles, who entered the game ranked No. 22 in Class 1A, while Patterson was the No. 14 team in Class 3A, both according to the latest unofficial Louisiana High School Athletic Association Power Rankings released Tuesday morning.
“It is always a great test at this time in the season to play Patterson because they have great players and are well coached,” Central Catholic head coach Ree Case said. “We had a plan defensively going into the game, and I thought our players believed in it and then executed the plan. I am really proud of our team, and I hope this gives us some confidence going into the second half of district.”
In Tuesday’s game, things started out good for Patterson as the Lumberjacks outscored Central Catholic 10-4 in the first period.
Central Catholic cut its deficit by halftime after outscoring Patterson 8-5 in the second period.
Patterson head coach Ryan Taylor said his team’s 31 percent shooting percentage from the field made it tough to win the game.
“We had some open looks that we have knocked down in the past, but they didn’t fall last night,” Taylor said. “I thought we did a good job defensively for the most part. When you hold your opponent in the 40s, you have a good chance to win. It just didn’t go our way.”
Samarick Paul led Central Catholic with 17 points, while Jalen Johnson had 15 points.
Other scorers included Stefano Guarisco, nine points; and Tanner Wiggins, four points.
Kenneth Washington led Patterson with eight points, while DJ Jones and Taylan Grogan had seven points.
Other scorers for Patterson included Nehemiah Augustus, six; Tyric Garrett, four; and Jordan Butler, three.
The Lumberjacks will return to District 9-3A action today when it makes the short trip to Berwick to face the Panthers. Junior varsity boys’ action is set for a 5 p.m. start, while after the varsity girls’ contest set for about 6 p.m. and, the varsity boys’ teams are set to meet at approximately 7:30 p.m.
Central Catholic will hit the road today when it travels to New Iberia to take on Highland Baptist. Junior varsity boys’ action is set for a 5 p.m. start with varsity girls to follow at about 6 p.m. and the varsity boys’ contest to begin at approximately 7:30 p.m.
