Staff Report

The TECHE Project’s Wildlife Management Workshop, to help those interested in obtaining and managing wood duck and eastern bluebird nest boxes, will be held at the VFW Post 4201 in Franklin Jan. 15 from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
In addition to those interested in obtaining and/or managing their new box, those who would like to learn about these birds are welcome to attend, too.
The event, to be held at the VFW Post 4201 at 1602 Sterling Road, is free to members of the Franklin Lion’s Club and the TECHE Project. A $5 fee will be charged for other attendees.
“This workshop is a great opportunity for those living near Bayou Teche to be part of the ecological improvement of the watershed while at the same time enjoying the fruits of your labor as young birds emerge from their boxes,” Council Member Patti Holland, a returned biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, said in a news release.
The workshop will start with a general ecology discussion of eastern bluebirds and wood ducks by Holland.
Council Member Brent Miller and his daughter Adeline will discuss their first-hand experiences from many years of rearing wood ducks on the banks of Bayou Teche.
The Millers will have a male wood duck onsite so participants can get an up-close, live experience of these birds.
Additionally, tips will be offered to manage property to deter nuisance wildlife, such as nutria.
Wood duck and blue bird boxes will be available for purchase, too.
Bayou Teche property owners are the target audience, but anyone who is interested in raising wood ducks or eastern bluebirds will benefit from this workshop.
