’Jacks roll past Donaldsonville

The Patterson Lumberjacks are rolling.
Patterson (5-2, 1-0) dominated new District 9-3A foe Donaldsonville 50-7 Friday for its fifth consecutive win.
The ’Jacks are averaging 40.3 points per game this season, but the defense also stepped up, pitching its first shutout of the season.
Patterson opened the scoring on its first possession when quarterback Spencer Landry found Jedrick Gunner for a 12-yard touchdown pass with 8:47 remaining in the first quarter.
Donaldsonville (3-4, 0-2) got its only score of the night on a pick-six by Percy Cargo. The Tigers led briefly 7-6 with 4:39 remaining in the first quarter.
The ’Jacks answered with a 7-play, 63-yard drive that  consisted exclusively of running plays. Deontay Jones’ 8-yard run with 2:32 left in the first quarter capped the drive.
Patterson rushed for 182 yards in the game.
“We wanted to establish our run game so the district can see that we can run the football,” Patterson head coach Tommy Minton said.
Jones had his second straight 100-yard game with 116 yards on 16 carries and two touchdowns. Tristen Ausama added 69 yards on 11 carries.
Landry added two more touchdown tosses in the second quarter to Mykel Jones, a 12-yard strike with 8:13 remaining and an old-fashioned 85-yard bomb with 24 seconds remaining in the half.
Landry was 11-of-12 passing for 212 yards, four touchdowns and an interception. The senior entered the game as the state’s top-ranked passer and now has completed 123-of-210 passes for 2,029 yards with 24 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
Mykel Jones, also among the state’s best wide receivers, had four catches for 113 yards and two touchdowns Friday. He has 39 receptions for 732 yards and nine touchdowns this season.
“We want to play to a certain standard,” Minton said. “We can’t judge ourselves by statistics, by the scoreboard or who we are playing. We have to play to our standard, and that’s what we preach to the kids every week and as long as we take that approach, we’ll be OK.”
Patterson led 28-7 at halftime.
The ’Jacks added three scores in the third quarter to push the lead to 50-7. Landry had a 40-yard pass to Gunner and an 8-yard run before leaving the game.
Deontay Jones concluded the scoring with his second rushing score, a 14-yard scamper with 37 seconds remaining in the quarter.
The Patterson defense held Donaldsonville to just 125 total yards. The ’Jacks forced four turnovers and had three sacks.
“We did a good job of taking away their receivers,” Minton said. “They had some big-play receivers and Shelby (Lavergne) and Shea Ragas held them down.”
Ragas had two interceptions.
Late in the third quarter, the Tigers and ’Jacks had a brief fight after a late hit on Patterson’s Daylon Charlot. Donaldsonville had two players ejected while Patterson received one unsportmanlike conduct penalty.
Leondre James, a Tulane commit as a receiver, played quarterback for the Tigers.
This week, Patterson will renew a long-time district rivalry with E.D. White (3-4, 1-1) Friday in Thibodaux. The Cardinals lost 6-0 to Franklin in overtime Friday.
