Berwick will meet Covenant Christian

I was very happy with the way we competed.

Berwick will host Covenant Christian in the first game of the Taco Bell/KFC St. Mary Parish Football Jamboree Friday at Tiger Stadium in Morgan City.
Berwick comes into the season with an influx of young talent.
The Panthers’ freshman and sophomore classes come in with a winning tradition.
When Berwick coach Craig Brodie took over the Panthers’ program, he reached out to junior high and youth league coaches in the area.
Berwick Junior High and several Berwick-based youth league teams won championships and now these students are the Panthers’ future.
The Panthers had a decent showing against Morgan City last week in a scrimmage. Despite being outscored in the contest three touchdowns to two, Brodie was pleased with Berwick’s effort.
“I was very happy with the way we competed,” Brodie said. “We came out of the gate and drove down the field and scored.”
Senior quarterback Jeremy Boudreaux capped the drive with a short touchdown run.
“We worked on getting our time down this week,” Brodie said. “We’re a triple option team so that’s very important. We started well against Morgan City but didn’t do that well when they went to the blitz.”
Senior quarterback Braden Billiot, sophomore D.J. Robicheaux and senior Draylan West all had big plays for the Panthers.
In the live quarter, Boudreaux connected with freshman Kenan Jones for a touchdown while limiting Morgan City to one touchdown on defense.
“We gave up a couple big runs on traps that really hurt us, and we need to work on our man-to-man coverage, but the effort was there,” Brodie said.
Covenant Christian had problems with South Plaquemines “physical power” in the controlled segment of the teams’ scrimmage a week ago, according to www.bayoupreps.com.
However, in the 12-minute “live” quarter, Covenant Christian responded from a 6-0 deficit late as Marquel Daigle connected with receiver Devante Johnson for a 5-yard touchdown pass.
Covenant Christian’s extra point attempt was good for the 7-6 final in the live quarter.
Lions fullback Devyn Allen was tops on the team with about 60 yards rushing on 10 carries.
“We watched the film of them against Central Catholic,” Brodie said. “They are similar to Morgan City. They run a Wing-T, and we’ve worked on defending that offense because we will see it again in the second week against Highland (Baptist).”
Friday’s contest will consist of two 15-minute halves with a 15-minute halftime between. Presale tickets are available at Berwick High School. Proceeds from these sales will remain at the school.
