Central Catholic High School will open its regular season tonight in Morgan City when it hosts St. John of Plaquemine.
Central Catholic enters the game after defeating Vermilion Catholic, 20-13, in the inaugural Iron Man Jamboree at Teurlings Catholic last week.
Meanwhile, St. John of Plaquemine fell to False River, 35-0, in jamboree action.
Neither Central Catholic nor St. John were able to get a scrimmage in because of inclement weather, meaning last week’s contests were their first action against an opponent this fall.
Central Catholic is ranked No. 6 in the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s Class 1A preseason poll.
St. John, led by first-year coach Ashton Cagnolatti, will run the Wing-T this season on offense.
Players of note for St. John are running back/strong safety Landon LeBlanc, center/defensive lineman Timmy Jumonville and running back/linebacker Justin Rivet.
As for Central Catholic, in last week’s win against Vermilion Catholic, running back Chris Singleton had two touchdown runs, while wide receiver Jalen Johnson, a University of Louisiana at Lafayette commit for defense, had the other touchdown.
Singleton and teammate Bailey Badeaux combined for 17 carries for 100 yards and two touchdowns.
Central Catholic quarterback Blake Byrne completed 7 of 13 passes for 133 yards and one touchdown. He completed passes to five different receivers and all but one of his passes were good for first-down yardage.
Defensively, senior Samarick Paul intercepted Vermilion Catholic quarterback J.T. Lege on the game’s last play to preserve the victory. DeDe Gant had another interception for the Eagles earlier in the contest.
Today’s game will be broadcast on KBZE 105.9 FM and KFRA 1390 AM.
