CCHS rolls past Berwick, 48-19

Central Catholic eased past Berwick High, 48-19, in girls’ basketball first-day action at Centerville’s Tournament of the Teche.
Central Catholic jumped out to a 17-4 lead after a quarter, extended its advantage to 32-8 at the half and 38-8 after three quarters. Berwick outscored Central Catholic, 11-10, in the fourth quarter.
Yani Johnson led Central Catholic with 19 points, while Hallie Autin also reached double figures with 17 points. Other scorers included Jaylasia Bertrand, six; Rebecca David, four; and Ava Nicar, two.
Madison Carline led Berwick with six points. Other scorers included Mary Jordan Melancon, five; Jordan Lipari, four; and Sydney Aucoin and Nicole Johnson, two points apiece.
Berwick (0-3) will return to action Friday at 7:30 p.m. when it faces Hanson at 7:30 p.m., while the Lady Panthers will close their tournament action Saturday with a 4:30 p.m. contest against Centerville.
Central Catholic (5-3) won’t return to action in the tournament until noon Saturday when it faces H.L. Bourgeois.

Morgan City staged a huge second-half comeback to force overtime but fell just short in the extra period, as it dropped a 62-59 decision to Hanson in first-day action at Centerville’s Tournament of the Teche.
Trailing 44-21 at the half, Morgan City outscored Hanson 35-12 in the second half to force overtime with the game tied at 56.
However, in the overtime period, Hanson outscored Morgan City, 6-3, for the victory.
Hanson led 26-16 after a period on the strength of five three-pointers.
The Lady Tigers’ hot three-point shooting continued in the second period with four more treys en route to the halftime lead.
Hanson, which had nine three-pointers, was held without a trey in the second half or overtime.
Morgan City outscored Hanson, 18-8, in the third period to cut its deficit to 52-39 after three quarters before outscoring Hanson 17-4 in the final period of regulation to force overtime.
Laqwaijha Bourgeois led three Morgan City players in double figures with 19 points. Alisha Singleton had 15 points and Sh’Diamond Holly, 14, for Morgan City. Other scorers included Deryon Johnson, six; Nia Lightfoot, four; Twanna LeBeau, two; and Indeara Chenevert, one.
Morgan City (2-2) will return to action Friday in Centerville when it faces Teurlings Catholic at 4:30 p.m. before concluding tournament play Saturday with a 9 a.m. contest against Patterson.
Lumberjills fall
to Teurlings
The Patterson Lumberjills fell to Teurlings Catholic, 49-30, in girls’ basketball action at Centerville’s Tournament of the Teche Thursday.
No individual statistics were available.
Patterson (2-1) will meet H.L. Bourgeois Friday at 6 p.m. and will play Morgan City Saturday at 9 a.m.
