Patterson jumped out to 21-0 lead en route to a 21-6 Class 3A second-round playoff win against Loranger Friday at the Sugar Dome.
Patterson (9-3), the No. 7-seed, will travel to North Webster (9-3), the No. 15-seed, for a third-round matchup Friday.
North Webster upset No. 2-seed Church Point, 21-16, Friday.
In the Lumberjacks’ win Friday, Patterson used a balanced offense and tenacious defense to subdue Loranger (7-5).
The Lumberjacks opened the scoring with a 19-yard touchdown run by Tristen Ausama with 5:32 remaining in the first quarter. Christian Soria added the PAT for a 7-0 lead.
Ausama continued his strong junior season with 19 carries for 113 yards and a touchdown to lead the Patterson ground game. He also had four catches for 51 yards.
Loranger’s defense double-teamed Patterson’s standout receivers, Daylon Charlot and Mykel Jones, which opened up the run game.
“We knew they were going to have to pick their poison, and we made our adjustments,” Patterson head coach Chad Blanchard said. “We did some things differently this week offensively, mainly because of what they do with their defense. The kids did a great job learning the game plan and executing it tonight.”
Quarterback Sirbatian Charles threw two short second quarter touchdown passes to Charlot and Jones. He found Charlot for a 3-yard score at the 6:29 mark and Jones on a 10-yarder with 2:31 remaining in the half.
Charles was 12-of-19 passing for 138 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. He also carried 16 times for 93 yards.
Jones has three catches for 25 yards and a touchdown, while Charlot had two receptions for 19 yards and a score.
Patterson led 21-0 at halftime.
“We did something we don’t do a ton of tonight and that’s run a lot of clock,” Blanchard said. “We converted some big third downs, and you have to do that if you want to go far in the playoffs.”
Patterson’s defense held the Wolves to just 51 first-half yards (40 yards rushing and 11 yards passing).
Loranger converted Charles’ second interception into points when quarterback Evan Johnson hit Deandre Brown for a 59-yard touchdown pass with 3:40 to play in the third quarter. It was Charles’ first two-interception game this season.
But the fourth quarter belonged to the ’Jacks’ defense and standout linebacker Nehemiah Augustus.
After another big Loranger pass play and with a first-and-goal at Patterson’s 4-yard line, Augustus went to work. The junior had a 15-yard sack and a drive-killing interception with 9:33 to play. Augustus had three sacks in the game.
“If we can stop the run like we did tonight and put teams in passing situations, we have some outstanding pass rushers,” Blanchard said. “Nehemiah, Shundren Johnson and Tyrik Singleton can really get after the quarterback.”
In North Webster’s win, the Knights’ Devin White scored a pair of touchdowns during an eight-minute span in the third period.
White had 26 carries for 179 yards and three touchdowns, while Lyntravious Gipson had 94 rushing yards on 21 carries.
Church Point led 10-7 at halftime.
