Three Lady Tigers earn all-state honors

Staff Report

Three Morgan City Lady Tigers earned Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class 4A honorable mention All-State recognition.
Sophomores Kennedy Hebert and Scottie Metrejean and senior Dwanna LeBeau earned the honors.
Hebert, already a first-team Louisiana Softball Coaches Association Class 4A All-State recipient earlier this postseason as a utility selection, was a first-team All-District 7-4A pitcher and the district’s Offensive MVP, too.
The recent verbal commit to Nicholls State finished her sophomore season with a 15-7 mark and a 1.16 ERA. In 138.1 innings, she surrendered 51 runs — 23 earned — on 84 hits with 31 walks, 13 hit batters and 198 strikeouts.
Offensively, she collected a hit in each of Morgan City’s 22 games this year on her way to a .577 batting average. In 71 at-bats, she recorded 41 hits, including 11 doubles, eight triples and four home runs. She also had 35 RBIs and scored 29 runs.
She walked just 11 times and fanned just five times all season. She also had a .643 on-base percentage and a 1.070 slugging percentage.
“Kennedy obviously had one of the best seasons around,” Morgan City softball coach Tamara Keller said. “She kind of exceeded all of our expectations pitching wise. I mean, we knew what she could do offensively. … But the pitching side is what really surprised us, and we weren’t really counting on that, so it was kind of an added bonus for us this season.”
LeBeau, a first-team all-district outfielder, batted .355 her senior season. In 78 at-bats, she had 27 hits, including six doubles, three triples and three home runs. She recorded 18 RBIs and scored 20 runs. LeBeau had a .396 on-base percentage and a .632 slugging percentage.
“Her athletic ability is not something you can replace very easily,” Keller said.
LeBeau, the team’s lone senior, will be missed for her leadership, Keller said.
“I can’t say enough good things about her. … She was our only senior, and we needed her leadership and guidance,” Keller said. “She always worked hard, and she just held the team together — a bunch of freshmen and sophomores.”
Metrejean, a first-team all-district catcher, finished the 2016 season with a .282 batting average. In 71 at-bats, she had 20 hits, including six doubles and one triple. She recorded 16 RBIs and score one run.
Metrejean walked just seven times all season and struck out only twice. She had an on-base percentage of .346 and a slugging percentage of .394.
“Scottie, again, I would say was a surprise,” Keller said. “She had a great season last year, but she really picked up her batting. … She’s a hard worker.”
Keller said Metrejean fed off Hebert’s solid performances on the mound.
“She did a great job behind the plate for us,” Keller said.
Other all-state honorable mention selections from Morgan City’s district included: Kaitlyn Moore of Ellender; Assumption’s Emily Blanchard, Jasmine Cox, Megan Breaux, Sunnie Rae Blanchard and Kassi Leonard; Emily Danos of South Lafourche; South Terrebonne’s Kelsie Authement, Maddie Boquet, Claire LeBlanc and Mikenzi Authement; and Vandebilt Catholic’s Cassie Boquet and Mackenzie Rousseau.
