The Morgan City 11-year-old All-Stars will begin play in the Louisiana Dixie Youth Majors State Tournament Friday at the University of Louisiana at Monroe.
The local squad, the winner of the District 3 title, will compete in pool play Friday and Saturday. The top team from each pool will advance to Sunday’s title game against the winner of the tournament’s other pool on Sunday at 2 p.m.
Joining Morgan City in Bracket B will be Alexandria, Union Parish and West Monroe North.
Morgan City will begin tournament action Friday at 8 p.m. against West Monroe North.
On Saturday, Morgan City will face Alexandria in a noon matchup before concluding pool play with a 5 p.m. contest versus Union Parish.
Bracket A consists of host West Monroe North as well as Sabine, Gonzales and Winnsboro.
Morgan City advanced to state after coming back from a 1-0 deficit against Thibodaux in the best-of-three series to earn the district title.
While Morgan City dropped game 1, 13-3, they responded with a come-from-behind 8-7 victory in game two before not letting a big Thibodaux rally in game 3 stop them from advancing in a 21-16 win Saturday.
Since the district tournament, Morgan City coach Tim Hebert said his team has continued to work hard.
“We’ve been practicing two hours a day since the district tournament, and they’re working well together as a team,” he said.
He said his team has “come a long way” in the past week and noted that in the three weeks they have been together, they have jelled as a team.
While Morgan City certainly would like to stay in the winning column this weekend, if they do have to face adversity, they certainly have their district tournament experience as evidence that they can turn things around.
“They don’t stop fighting,” Hebert said.
If the team makes an error, Morgan City puts the play behind them and moves on to the next, Hebert said.
“They don’t get bogged down in the error,” he said. “They just keep fighting through it.”
