Morgan City, SMC to meet for district title

Morgan City finished 3-0 this weekend at the District 3 District Tournament at Caffery Park and will meet St. Mary Central today at 5:30 p.m. for the district title.
Morgan City won its three games by a combined 23-0 score. The squad defeated Patterson 10-0 Friday before topping Thibodaux 12-0 Saturday and Franklin, 1-0, Sunday.
In Friday’s win, Luke Barbier finished 3-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs to lead Morgan City offensively.
On the mound, he tossed three innings and surrendered no hits, one walk and fanned seven.
In relief, Dylan Cornes surrendered one hit in one inning of work and fanned two.
Other top offensive contributors included Matt Mire, 3-for-3; Trent Hillen, 2-for-3, three RBIs; Gunnar Theriot, 1-for-2, an RBI; Zack Bennett, 1-for-1; and Hugh Hamer and Dakota Gibson, each 1-for-2.
Against Thibodaux, Mire led Morgan City with a 3-for-3 performance with a three-run home run and four RBIs.
He also pitched three innings, surrendered a hit and fanned four.
Other pitchers for Morgan City included Bennett, who pitched one inning and fanned two; Hillen, one inning and three strikeouts; and Cornes, one inning and two strikeouts.
Other top offensive contributors included Hillen, 2-for-3, two RBIs; Barbier, 2-for-4, an RBI; Hugh Hamer, 1-for-2, an RBI; Theriot, 1-for-3, an RBI; Gibson and Grant Cheramie, each 1-for-1; and Bennett, Brett Morell and Kolin Crappell, each 1-for-2.
In their win against Franklin, Barbier and Hillen combined to strikeout 14 and surrendered just one hit and one walk in the victory.
Barbier pitched the first three innings and fanned eight.
Hillen tossed the last three, surrendered a hit and a walk and fanned six.
Offensively, Hillen was 1-for-3 with a home run and one RBI, while Theriot was 2-for-3.
Other top offensive contributors included Mire, 1-for-2; and Morell, 1-for-3.
St. Mary Central goes 3-1
this weekend
St. Mary Central finished 2-1 at the district tournament this weekend, suffering its lone loss Saturday to Patterson at Caffery Park in Franklin.
After defeating Franklin 4-0 Friday, St. Mary Central fell 6-3 to Patterson Saturday.
On Sunday, St. Mary Central bounced back with a 12-2 victory against Thibodaux.
St. Mary Central and Morgan City will meet today in each team’s tournament finale at 5:30 p.m. today at Caffery Park.
In Friday’s win, Carter Williams earned the win as he tossed three innings, surrendered one hit and fanned five.
Ross Thomas pitched three innings of relief and surrendered two hits, one walk and fanned four.
Offensively, Clay Menard finished 3-for-3 to lead St. Mary Central, while Ryan Domingue was 2-for-3.
Other top offensive contributors were Thomas, 1-for-3, two RBIs; and Grant Hebert, 1-for-3.
In Saturday’s loss to Patterson, errors hurt St. Mary Central as just one of the six runs surrendered was earned. Clay Menard suffered the loss.
Patterson also pounded the ball, recording nine hits.
Menard suffered the loss. In 4.2 innings, he surrendered nine hits, six runs — one earned — and fanned six.
In relief, Domingue pitched 1.1 perfect innings with three strikeouts.
Offensive, Brannan Chasson finished 1-for-2 with a double for St. Mary Central, while Hebert was 1-for-3 with a double.
Other top offensive contributors included Thomas, Parker Kulka and Matt Broussard, each 1-for-2; and Menard, 1-for-3.
On Sunday, St. Mary Central bounced back with a 12-2 victory against Thibodaux.
Grant Hebert earned the win, tossing a two hitter. In six innings, he surrendered two runs — one earned — with two walks and fanned seven.
Offensively, Hebert finished 3-for-3 with a double, while Broussard and Robbie Conner each were 2-for-3.
Other top offensive contributors included Menard, 2-for-4; Tanner Simmons, 1-for-2; Jojo Williams, 1-for-3; and Kulka, 1-for-4.
St. Mary Central will face Morgan City today at 5:30 p.m.
Patterson finishes 1-2
this weekend
Patterson recorded a 1-2 mark this weekend at the District 3 Tournament.
Patterson fell 10-0 to Morgan City Friday before falling 10-9 Saturday morning.
Later Saturday, however, Patterson bounced back with a 6-3 victory against St. Mary Central.
In Friday night’s contest, Don Diaz and Joseph Larson split the pitching duties.
Patterson coach Nate Samuel said fielding errors were among the things that hurt his squad in the loss.
On Saturday, Patterson suffered a tough loss to Franklin as Franklin rallied late following what Samuels said were a “couple controversial base calls” for a 10-9 victory.
Reid Perkins pitched in the game for Patterson.
Later Saturday, Larson pitched a complete-game victory for the win against St. Mary Central.
Larson had a shut out through five innings, and Patterson held off St. Mary Central in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Patterson will play their final game in the district tournament today against Thibodaux at 7:30 p.m.
“I'd like to say I am very impressed (with) this team fighting (through) some big ups and downs in this tournament,” Samuels said. “We started off the tournament slow but picked it up (throughout).”
Despite adversity, Samuels said, “Our boys kept playing (through) and gave it their all regardless of the outcome. Very proud of this great group of boys.”
