Patterson to host Berwick for homecoming

Patterson welcomes local rival Berwick for homecoming Friday.
The Lumberjacks (6-2, 2-0 District 9-3A) have won six games straight games after starting the season 0-2.
In their latest win, Patterson had to rally for a 40-34 victory against E.D. White in Thibodaux.
Trailing 34-32, Patterson went on an 8-play, 67-yard drive with the big play coming on third-and-13 from the E.D. White 38-yard line when quarterback Spencer Landry connected with standout receiver Daylon Charlot for 30 yards to setup a first-and-goal at the 8-yard line. On second-and-three, Deontay Jones burst through the Cardinals defense for the winning score with just more than a minute remaining in the contest.
E.D. White got the ball back with 56 seconds left and never threatened to score.
Landry led the                            ’Jacks offense, completing 20-of-28 passes for 297 yards and four touchdowns. The senior has completed 143-of-238 passes for 2,326 yards with 28 touchdowns and 10 interceptions this season.
Charlot was the top receiver a week ago, pulling in five balls for 125 yards and a score. The junior has 35 receptions for 683 yards and 11 touchdowns this season.
Jedrick Gunner also had a big game with six catches for 82 yards and two scores. Gunner, a senior, has 22 receptions for 310 yards and six touchdowns this year.
Sophomore standout Mykel Jones leads the team with 46 catches for 811 yards and 10 scores.
In last week’s win, Patterson rushed for 163 yards.
Deontay Jones carried 12 times for 67 yards and two touchdowns. Jones has carried 79 times for 446 yards and nine scores this season. Tristen Ausama added 52 yards on 10 carries. The sophomore has 64 rushes for 342 yards and a touchdown this season.
“We played well offensively,” Patterson head coach Tommy Minton said. “We did some good things in both the passing and run games. We also didn’t have any turnovers. Anytime you play you don’t want to give your opponents more opportunities to score.”
The ’Jacks have been on the road three straight weeks, so it’s a true homecoming Friday.
“I want the kids to enjoy homecoming,” Minton said. “I just ask that they focus on the task at hand.”
Berwick (2-6, 0-2) fell behind 33-0 in the first half Friday en route to a 46-0 loss to Donaldsonville.
The Panthers failed to keep the visitors out of the end zone on every Donaldsonville first-half possession except the final one when the Tigers took possession with 17 seconds remaining in the half.
“We were outmatched by superior athletes,” Berwick coach Craig Brodie said after the game. “They were big, tall and athletic.”
Patterson beat Donaldsonville 50-7 two weeks ago.
“We have two games to play (left in the season), and we know what we are up against,” Brodie said. “Patterson is a very good football team, and all we can do is ask our kids to play hard, to do their best.”
Berwick also will be without starting quarterback Bobby Boudreaux due to an injury, Brodie said. The senior signal caller has completed 38-of-100 passes for 526 yards with five touchdowns and six interceptions this season.
“Jeremy Boudreaux will start,” Brodie said. “He started the last two games last season. We are comfortable with what Jeremy brings; it was a close battle between those guys this summer. We will miss Bobby’s leadership and presence in the huddle, but we will be OK.”
Bobby Boudreaux is also the team’s leading rusher with 104 carries for 348 yards and six touchdowns.
Jeremy Boudreaux has rushed 42 times for 191 yards and two touchdowns this season. He has attempted just one pass this season, last week against Donaldsonville.
Other top rushers for Berwick are Brooks Richard, 35 carries for 296 yards and three touchdowns, and Justin Morvant, 41 carries for 246 yards.
Berwick’s top receivers are Richard with 15 catches for 250 yards and two touchdowns and Morvant, who has hauled in seven passes for 113 yards.
Against Patterson, Brodie said, “The biggest thing for us is to avoid turnovers. They have very good athletes, and they can score on your mistakes. We know what we are up against; but we control our effort.”
Friday’s kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
