New chamber member

The St. Mary Chamber of Commerce welcomes its newest member, the Krewe of Dionysus. It originated in 1980 as the Berwick, Bayou Vista Mardi Gras Association, a mystical Mardi Gras krewe. They are a 100-member organization and held their first ball in an airplane hangar at the Wedel Williams Memorial Airport in Patterson. In 2001, the name was changed to Krewe of Dionysus, to fall into the tradition of choosing names to represent mystical gods and goddesses. Dionysus is the god of comedy, tragedy and wine. Royalty is revealed at the tableau-ball each year, which will be held Feb. 18 at the Berwick Civic Center. The public is invited to view the tableau from the balcony each year, free of charge. The parade route rotates each year between Berwick and Bayou Vista. This coming year, the parade will roll in Bayou Vista on Feb. 25. The parade consists of 13-plus floats, sound systems, decorated truck trailers, four-wheelers, firetrucks and horses. Outside organizations and individuals are allowed to place floats and trailers into the Krewe of Dionysus parade, but must be registered with the krewe prior to the parade date. The Board of Directors includes Debbie LeBlanc, chairman; Cindy Marino, president; Fred Moses, first vice president; Martha Bourgeois, second vice president; Pam Mahaffey, secretary; John Trevino, treasurer; and Mark Landry, Angela Bergeron, Scott Vice, Alicia Price, Roddy Richard and Walter Shepherd.
