Brown wins Hero of the Week award

Staff Report

Based on her performance in the victory against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Dec. 31, University of New Orleans junior guard Randi Brown has been voted Division 1 Women’s Basketball Hero of the Week by Hero Sports.
Brown, a Central Catholic alum, had 45 points, six rebounds, two assists and two blocks in the Privateers’ 75-54 win against the Islanders. Her point total broke a school-record set in 1981 by New Orleans All American and former Harlem Globetrotter Sandra Hodge and her nine 3-pointers in a single game also set a new program mark.
She is the Southland Conference’s leading scorer, averaging 20.9 points per game, and she grabbed 65 percent of votes cast by fans. The second-place finisher polled 19 percent of ballots cast.
“I’d just like to tell the fans thank you for their support, because it means a lot to me,” Brown said in a news release. “But they are fans of the team and the university as a whole.”
The Houma native outpolled players like Jessica Jackson of Arkansas and Kelsey Plum of Washington, the nation’s leading scorer.
