Charpentier to start ULL's season opener

Staff Report

The University of Louisiana at Lafayette baseball team will open its season tonight in its three-game series at the University of Texas-San Antonio.
Sophomore Chris Charpentier, a Berwick High alum, will take the mound for today’s 6 p.m. contest.
Charpentier is listed in UL’s starting rotation this season. A year ago, he finished the season 1-0 with his lone start coming against Jackson State in the Lafayette Regional.
Today, he will battle against Texas-San Antonio right-handed pitcher Brock Hartson.
Hartson was 7-3 with a 2.24 ERA in 2014.
Game two of the series is set for 2 p.m. on Saturday, while the third and final game of the series is slated for 1 p.m. Sunday. Fans can listen to all three games live on News Radio KPEL 96.5 FM with Dan McDonald making the call and Jeff Schneider providing color. Live stats are available for the series on GoUTSA.com.
Freshman right-hander Evan Guillory is scheduled to start Saturday for ULL, and senior right-hander Greg Milhorn has been tabbed as the Sunday starter. Milhorn went 5-2 a year ago, including a victory at LSU.
On Saturday, the Roadrunners will start junior left-hander Nolan Trabanino, while on Sunday, senior left-hander Cody Brannon will take the mound.
Trabanino had a team-best nine wins with a 2.43 ERA a year ago.
Junior All-American Blake Trahan anchors a Ragin’ Cajuns offensive that is missing a good portion of its production from a year ago, losing seven of 10 everyday players. Preseason All-Sun Belt selection Dylan Butler and senior Tyler Girouard join Trahan as the only three returning players to post 30-plus RBIs in 2014.
UTSA is missing its top three hitters from a year ago, with John Bormann and Jesse Baker the top two returning hitters on this year’s squad. Bormann hit .288 with 12 doubles, four home runs and 24 RBIs and Baker had a .273 average with 12 doubles, 3 triples, six home runs, 37 RBIs and a team-best 11 stolen bases.
Following the series against UTSA, the Cajuns will head up I-49 north to Natchitoches to face in-state foe Northwestern State in a mid-week contest Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Louisiana's home opener is Feb. 20-22 against Stony Brook at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field. Season tickets still are available for the 2015 season. Fans can order tickets by visiting RaginCajuns.com or by calling 337-265-2100.
