Colonels to host Alabama A&M

Staff Report

The red-hot Nicholls State University baseball team will face Alabama A&M in a midweek battle at 6 p.m. today at Ray E. Didier Field.
The Colonels (28-16-1) are riding a four-game winning streak after downing ULM, 16-6, before a three-game sweep of Houston Baptist last weekend.
During Sunday’s 7-2 win against Houston Baptist, Nicholls State senior and Berwick High alum David Zorn finished 3-for-4 with two runs.
The Bulldogs (26-28) won four of their last six matchups before being swept in a doubleheader by the University of Alabama Tuesday.
Nicholls is set to throw righty Marc Frazier (2-5). Frazier brings an ERA of 3.49 with 48 strikeouts through 59 1/3 innings and enters the matchup playing some of the best ball of his career.
During the last nine innings, Frazier has 10 strikeouts and allowed just five hits with a spotless 0.00 ERA.
Kyle Reese spearheads the Colonel offense with a .347 batting average, 27 RBIs, 27 runs and leads the Southland Conference with 15 doubles. Justin Holt is second on the team with a .316 average and paces the squad with 32 runs.
While Nicholls struggled mightily at the plate for the majority of the 2015 season, the Colonel offense has been outstanding recently. During the last 10 games, the team has a .333 average, compared to their .262 season average.
Reese and Holt are batting .476 and .442, respectively, during that stretch, with a combined 20 runs and 18 RBIs.
Justen Folger leads the Bulldog offense with a .364 average. Andrew Utterback has scored 47 runs, and Julio Nunez has 50 RBIs, both team-highs.
Wednesday’s matchup will be broadcast live on KTIB 640 AM. Nicholls will return to conference play against New Orleans in a three-game home-away-home series this weekend.
