Lamar blows past Nicholls State, 56-34

BEAUMONT, Texas (AP) — Caleb Berry passed for 329 yards and five touchdowns — four in the breakaway second quarter — and Lamar added 21 points off turnovers in the fourth to blow past Nicholls State 56-34 Saturday night.

Scoring came fast and furious in a 45-point second quarter, the teams trading score for score, but Lamar (4-5, 1-3 Southland) led 35-17 at halftime. Nicholls State (4-5, 1-3) rallied to within 35-27 in the third quarter but Lamar turned back-to-back-to-back Colonels fumbles plus an interception into 21 points inside of four minutes.

Kade Harrington rushed for two scores, caught two more and broke Lamar's freshman rushing record (607 yards, 1951, Sammy Carpenter) with 52 yards on 18 carries.

Nicholls State's Dalton Hilliard Jr. had career bests of 111 yards rushing and two TDs since becoming a starter two weeks ago. Carey Fortson's 94-yards kickoff return for a TD was the Colonels first since 2011.
