Louisiana College beats Belhaven

Staff Report

The Louisiana College men’s basketball team defeated Belhaven, 82-71, Thursday night in front of an energized home crowd.
The Wildcats played with an intensity and urgency that seemed to be lacking during the last few weeks. Four players scored in double figures as Louisiana College shot better than 50 percent from the field.
The Wildcats got off to a quick start with back-to-back jumpers from Travis Schultz to take a 4-0 lead 90 seconds into the game.
Belhaven stormed back thanks to some productive shooting from beyond the arc and took as much as an eight point lead in the first 10 minutes.
Down by eight with 11:20 remaining in the first half, the Wildcats put together an 18-4 run to go ahead 31-25 on a layup from Brandon Watkins at the 6:11 mark of the half.
The Blazers got within three a couple of minutes later, but a 13-3 run by Louisiana College during the final five minutes gave the Wildcats a 46-33 halftime lead. The run was capped by a 3-pointer from Travis Schultz with 12 seconds remaining.
Belhaven came out strong in the second half and pulled within five points after a 10-2 run in the first two and a half minutes.
Louisiana College answered thanks to Taylan Grogan scoring seven of the Wildcats’ next eight points to put Louisiana College back up by double digits at 56-43.
The closest the Blazers got the rest of the way was seven points at the 13:03 mark of the second half.
Raheem Regis led the Wildcats with 20 points and nine rebounds, which extended his double-digit scoring streak to 10 consecutive games. Grogan, Patterson High alum, had another solid night with 14 points, while Timothy Stokes had 13 points, eight assists and five rebounds and Schultz ended with 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting.
The Wildcats head out on a four-game American Southwest Conference East road trip for the remainder of January with trips to Ozarks, UT Dallas, UT Tyler and LeTourneau.
