Louisiana College falls to Concordia

Staff Report

The Louisiana College Wildcats men’s basketball team could not overcome an outstanding shooting night from Concordia Monday, especially from long range, en route to a 96-81 loss to the Tornado.
The Tornado shot 53.6 percent from three-point range in the game, including 50 percent in the second half.
In the first half, the Wildcats and Tornado went back and forth the majority of the time. The Wildcats led on five different occasions, including three times in the game’s first three minutes, and the final two times coming in the half’s final four minutes.
A layup at the 16:42 mark of the first half by Patterson High alum Taylan Grogan gave the Wildcats an 8-7 lead that was taken away three minutes later on a three pointer from Ephriam Price.
Concordia led for the next nine minutes until a pair of free throws from Travis Schultz and a layup from Grogan on consecutive possession gave Louisiana College the lead back at 28-26 with 4:22 remaining.
Concordia regained the lead on back-to-back three pointers with less than three minutes remaining in the first half.
Down by four, Louisiana College made a quick 6-0 run to take the lead back, thanks to layups from LeBlanc, Davis and Stokes.
The Wildcats’ run was answered by five points to end the half from the Tornado to take the lead for good.
Louisiana College worked back within four in the second half on multiple occasions six minutes into the second half, but Concordia’s hot shooting kept Louisiana College from pulling within a single possession each time.
The Tornado went 6-of-12 from 3-point range in the second half and 15-for-28 overall. They also made 21-of-24 free throws.
Grogan finished with a career-best 23 points and six assists, while Raheem Regis extended his double-digit scoring streak to nine consecutive games with 18 points Monday. Jacquez Coleman was the only other player to score in double digits, his second game in a row to reach that mark, with 10 points.
The Wildcats will play their first game in H.O. West this season Thursday evening in another non-conference matchup with Belhaven. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
