2 jailed for armed robbery

Two men were arrested in connection with a Saturday night armed robbery in the area of Orange Street and Federal Avenue, after which both men tried to flee from officers, Morgan City Police Chief Michael Banks said in a news release.
—Johnathan G. Evans, 20, of Tiffany Street in Patterson, was arrested at 9:02 p.m. Saturday for armed robbery, resisting an officer, use of a firearm during armed robbery, possession of Schedule I marijuana with the intent to distribute, possession of a firearm in the presence of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of a firearm in a firearm free zone, violation of uniformed controlled dangerous substance law-school zone, a warrant from the St. Mary Sheriff’s Office for possession of a Schedule I controlled dangerous substance and criminal mischief.
—Kerry Martin, 17, of Garber Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 9:01 p.m. Saturday for resisting an officer.
Martin was rearrested at 11:34 p.m. Sunday and additionally charged on a warrant for accessory after the fact to armed robbery, a warrant for possession of a firearm in the presence of a controlled dangerous substance, a warrant for possession of Schedule I marijuana with the intent to distribute, and possession of firearm in a firearm free zone.
At 8:35 p.m. Saturday, officers responded to a complaint of an armed robbery in the area of Orange Street and Federal Avenue. As officers arrived in the area they secured a description of the suspect involved. As officers searched the area, an officer encountered two people who matched the description of the suspect and attempted to detain them for questioning.
Both of them fled from officers and a chase ensued, Banks said. Officers were able to apprehend both men identified as Martin and Evans.
Officers were also able to recover a small handgun along with a large cellophane bag which contained 18 individual packages of suspected marijuana, which had been discarded by the subjects during the chase, Banks said. Police recovered $225 in cash from Evans, which was reported being taken during the robbery, Banks said. Evans was positively identified by the victim as the person who had committed the armed robbery.
The area of Orange Street and Federal Avenue where the incident occurred is a posted “Firearm Free” zone. Furthermore, the area is within 1,000 feet of a drug-free school zone.
Evans was jailed where he remains. Martin, who had originally fled from officers during the incident was initially booked with resisting an officer and released.
Detectives continued to investigate the incident and recovered evidence suggesting Kerry Martin was involved after the armed robbery by attempting to discard and conceal evidence in the crime, Banks said.
Martin was accused of attempting to discard and conceal the weapon used along with the marijuana that was located, Banks said. Martin, who had bailed out on the original charge, was located and arrested on warrants filed by detectives. Martin was jailed where he remains
