Two Berwick men were charged Tuesday after they were accused of throwing bags of methamphetamine and marijuana out of a vehicle window when St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office narcotics detectives attempted to make a traffic stop in Siracusaville, St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert said in a news release.
—Travis Johnson, 39, of the 700 block of Utah Street in Berwick, was arrested at 2:31 p.m. Tuesday for possession of marijuana third offense, possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, obstruction of justice, possession of Schedule II (Norco), possession of drug paraphernalia, resisting an officer, violation of a controlled dangerous substance law (church) and littering.
—Brian Henderson, 31, of the 700 block of Utah Street in Berwick, was arrested at 2:31 p.m. Tuesday for driving under suspension, improper lane usage, possession of marijuana second offense, possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, resisting an officer and obstruction of justice.
Narcotics detectives observed a vehicle cross over the fog line while traveling on U.S. 90 in the Siracusaville area and initiated a traffic stop, Hebert said. The driver of the vehicle failed to pull over, Hebert said. Detectives continued to follow the SUV and observed the two occupants throwing bags of methamphetamine and marijuana out of the vehicle, the sheriff said.
Shortly after the occupants discarded the illegal drugs, the driver of the vehicle stopped on Roderick Street in Morgan City, Hebert said. Detectives made contact with both occupants, identifying the driver as Henderson and the passenger as Johnson. As detectives moved to detain both suspects, Johnson began eating a small amount of additional drugs that were in the vehicle, the sheriff said. Detectives also observed a bag of methamphetamine in his lap.
During a search of Johnson, detectives located a Norco pill. The bags of methamphetamine and marijuana thrown from the SUV were recovered, Hebert said. The traffic stop occurred less than 2,000 feet from a church on Roderick Street. Johnson and Henderson were jailed.
Hebert reported responding to 45 complaints in the parish and reported the following arrests in east St. Mary Parish:
—Jason Mathews, 33, of the 100 block of Friendship Alley in Amelia, was arrested at 7:55 p.m. Tuesday on a warrant for failure to appear on the charges of improper turn, operating a vehicle without a driver’s license and failure to honor written promise to appear. Mathews was located at a residence in Bayou L’Ourse, jailed and released after paying a $335 fine.
—John Fitzgerald, 56, of the 200 block of Lake Palourde Road in Amelia, was arrested at 8:18 p.m. Tuesday on a St. Martin Parish warrant for failure to appear on the charge of riding or hauling on levees. A deputy assigned to patrol the Amelia area made contact with Fitzgerald and discovered the active warrant for his arrest. Fitzgerald was jailed.
—Fonzie Wade, 35, of the 100 block of Sun Road in Bayou Vista, was arrested at 2:22 a.m. today on a warrant for failure to appear on the charge of issuing worthless checks. A deputy responding to an unrelated complaint made contact with Wade at his residence and learned of the active warrant for his arrest. Wade was jailed with no bail set.
Berwick Police Chief James Richard reported the following arrest:
—Jason Mathews, 33, of Friendship Alley in Amelia, was arrested at 12:07 a.m. today on a warrant for failure to appear for leash law violation. Mathews was released on $300 bail.
Patterson Police Chief Patrick LaSalle reported no arrests.
Morgan City Police Assistant Chief Mark Griffin Jr. reported no arrests.
