Assumption deputy arrested, fired after domestic incident, sheriff says

An Assumption Parish patrol deputy was fired after his superiors completed an investigation into a domestic dispute that occurred Sunday.
Sheriff Mike Waguespack said Assumption Parish dispatchers received a call about the domestic dispute around 2:30 a.m. Sunday. They responded to the 100 block of Daniel Street in Pierre Part.
Deputy Gary Ellis Jr., 30, of the 100 block of Daniel Street had been drinking all night at a party and an argument ensued upon his return home, Waguespack said.
The sheriff said that during the argument, before deputies arrived, Ellis threw his wife to the floor in different rooms of the house.
When the first deputy on scene attempted to calm him down, Ellis confronted her, grabbed her and attempted to grab her duty weapon, Waguespack said. Other responding deputies arrived on scene and took control of the situation.
The complaint was referred to the Criminal Investigative Division of the Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office for investigation.
Upon completion of all interviews, Ellis, a four-year veteran with the Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office, was terminated.
Capt. Darren Crochet later arrested him and booked him in the Assumption Parish Detention Center Monday for domestic abuse battery, battery on a police officer and attempted disarming of a peace officer.
No bail is set.
