Gun free, drug free

Morgan City city government representative Doug Pye and Morgan City Police Chief James Blair display an example of the “drug free” and “gun free” signs that were installed as statutory requirement. State law declares that anyone who commits certain drug violations within 2,000 feet of school property can receive a sentence of 1-1/2 times the sentence received for the drug violation alone, police said. This law also applies to other areas such as drug treatment facilities, religious buildings and churches, public housing areas and day-care facilities. The Morgan City Police Department purchased new signs to mark the affected areas within the city. The signs were purchased with money seized from narcotics violators, police said. Anyone with information on this type of crime or any other crime should contact the Morgan City Police Department at 985-384-2310, 911 or your local law enforcement agency.
