Iberia sheriff: Franklin man had hundreds of pills, three guns, other drugs

A 28-year-old Franklin man was arrested Sunday in Iberia Parish on 11 drug and gun charges after authorities found over 800 Xanax pills, over 400 ecstasy pills, three firearms and multiple other drugs after searching his vehicle, Iberia Parish Sheriff Louis Ackal said in a news release.
J’Von J. Smith, 28, of Franklin, was arrested by the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office on numerous charges after Smith was investigated for having his vehicle parked in a private parking lot, the release said.
Deputies initially respond-ed to a suspicious vehicle at the 700 block of West Admiral Doyle. When approaching the vehicle, deputies observed Smith sleeping in the driver’s seat. Deputies then observed a handgun in the vehicle along with an AR-15 type rifle in the backseat of the vehicle, the release said. Deputies asked Smith to exit the vehicle as part of their investigation.
Smith exited the vehicle and then fled on foot. After a brief foot pursuit, deputies were able to apprehend Smith. During the pursuit, deputies observed Smith attempting to reach into his waist band where it was later discovered that Smith was concealing a handgun. Smith was taken into custody without incident, the release said. Deputies learned that Smith had an outstanding warrant for failure to appear.
After an inventory of Smith’s vehicle, deputies were able to locate numerous illegal narcotics and firearms including 872 tablets of Xanax, 451 tablets of MDMA (ecstasy), 3.8 pounds of marijuana, 80 ounces of Promethazine, 3 grams of heroin, 16 grams of crack cocaine, 58 grams of methamphetamine, 9 grams of powder cocaine, 34 tablets of Tramadol, 46 tablets of Vyvanse, 41 tablets of Hydrocodone, 44 tablets of Oxycodone, a .38-caliber revolver, a .40-caliber semi-automatic pistol, a 5.56 mm AR-15 style semi-automatic rifle and about $5,325 in U.S. currency.
Smith was then booked into the Iberia Parish Jail on the charges of possession with intent to distribute Schedule I drugs, possession with intent to distribute Schedule II drugs, possession with intent to distribute Schedule IV drugs, possession with intent to distribute Schedule V drugs, possession of methamphetamine over 28 grams, possession of controlled dangerous substance in a drug free zone, second or subsequent offense for controlled dangerous substance, monies derived from the sales of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of a firearm with a controlled dangerous substance, possession of a firearm by convicted felon and possession of drug paraphernalia.
