Inmate accused of committing battery on jailer

A 35-year-old Morgan City woman was accused of committing a battery on a correctional officer Tuesday while in the Morgan City jail, Police Chief James Blair said in a news release.
—Sherkera M. Sylvester, 35, of Short Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 6 p.m. Tuesday on the charge of battery on a correctional officer.
Sylvester, while incarcerated in the Morgan City jail, committed a battery on a correctional officer. Sylvester was rebooked on additional charges and remains incarcerated.
Blair reported the following arrests:
—Richard Fortner, 58, of David Drive in Patterson, was arrested at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday on the charges of reckless operation of a motor vehicle and DWI.
An officer responded to the intersection of Brashear Avenue and Sixth Street in regard to a traffic accident involving two vehicles. Fortner was identified to be the driver of one of the vehicles involved in the accident.
During the investigation, police determined that Fortner had operated the vehicle in a reckless manner which caused the accident. Fortner also appeared to be intoxicated, Blair said.
Fortner submitted to the Intoxilyzer 5000 test yielding a blood alcohol concentration of 0.159 grams-percent. Fortner was jailed.
—Herman J. Jones, 50, of Arizona Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 3:23 p.m. Tuesday on a warrant charging him with failure to appear for over limit possession of red drum.
Jones was located by officers at a residence on Fifth Street and arrested on an active arrest warrant held by the 32nd Judicial District Court. Jones was jailed.
St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert reported responding to 40 complaints in the parish and reported the following arrests in east St. Mary Parish:
—Corey Tarver, 38, of the 1800 block of Main Street in Patterson, was arrested at 5:23 p.m. Tuesday on a warrant for failure to appear on the charge of issuing worthless checks and on a warrant for failure to appear for a drug court status conference. Tarver turned himself in at the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center. No bail is set.
—Webster A. Ubaldo, 28, of the 300 block of Guilbeau Road in Lafayette, was arrested at 3:28 a.m. today on the charges of no driver’s license on person, driving under suspension and improper lane usage.
A deputy traveling on U.S. 90 in the Patterson area observed a vehicle swerving off the roadway and conducted a traffic stop. While speaking with the driver, Ubaldo, the deputy discovered that he did not have a driver’s license with him and that his license was listed as suspended. Ubaldo was released on a summons to appear in court May 4.
—Felicia Young, 44, of the 1000 block of Ciro Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 12:19 p.m. Friday on a warrant for failure to appear on the charge of disturbing the peace intoxicated.
During booking at the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center, a correctional officer located the active warrant for Young’s arrest. Young was transferred to another jurisdiction.
—Nicole Cheavis, 27, of the 100 block of 11th Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 4:42 p.m. Monday on the charge of disturbing the peace by language and on a warrant from the Patterson Police Department for failure to appear on the charges of expired license plate and no proof of insurance.
A deputy conducting a vehicle stop for a traffic violation off of U.S. 90 in Bayou Vista made contact with several occupants in the SUV, including a passenger identified as Cheavis. While speaking with the deputy, Cheavis began cursing loudly, causing a disturbance in the parking lot of the business where the driver stopped.
The deputy also located an active warrant from Patterson police for Cheavis’ arrest. After being transported to the parish jail for booking, Cheavis was released on a summons to appear in court May 4.
Patterson Police Chief Patrick LaSalle reported no arrests.
