Police: Man kicked two officers during stop

A 34-year-old Lake Charles man was jailed Saturday after kicking two Morgan City police officers when they saw him trying to conceal something in his mouth during a traffic stop, Police Chief James Blair said in a news release.
—Craig Nini, 34, of Arkansas Street in Lake Charles, was arrested at 1:21 a.m. Saturday on two counts of battery on an officer, resisting an officer with force and obstruction of justice.
A patrolling officer conducted a traffic stop on La. 182 near Martin Luther King Boulevard in regard to the vehicle traveling out of its lane. During the investigation, the officer could hear what sounded like a disturbance inside the vehicle.
As the officer spoke with the driver of the vehicle, other officers arrived to assist. They observed a passenger inside the vehicle, identified as Nini, moving frantically inside the vehicle and was believed to be attempting to conceal something from officers. Officers asked Nini to exit the vehicle. Nini appeared to have concealed something inside his mouth, and the officer told Nini to remove the object.
Nini pushed the officer and a struggle ensued. During the struggle, Nini resisted violently and kicked two of the officers, Blair said.
After several moments of fighting, police were able to gain control of Nini and place him in handcuffs. Police retrieved a bag from Nini’s mouth containing an unknown substance. The unknown substance was obtained as evidence to be sent to a criminal laboratory for analysis. Nini was jailed.
Blair reported the following arrests:
—Kentrell F. Diggs, 23, of Opelousas Street in Donaldsonville, was arrested at 10:58 p.m. Friday on warrants charging him with probation violation, failure to appear for possession of stolen things, contempt of court and aggravated battery.
—Joey P. Wiggins, 58, of Tupelo Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 10:28 a.m. Sunday on warrants charging him with aggravated battery and simple criminal damage to property.
Police located Wiggins in the area of Songe Street and arrested him.
—Shane P. Scully, 27, of Tupelo Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 6:29 p.m. Sunday on a warrant charging him with obstruction of justice.
Scully was located at a supermarket on La. 182 and was arrested.
At 7:05 p.m. May 22, the Morgan City Police Department responded to a complaint of a stabbing which was reported in the area of Pecan Street. Officers arrived to discover a male victim of an apparent stab wound along with another male victim which had been struck by a blunt object, Blair said. Both victims were transported to medical facilities where they received treatment for their injuries. Investigators determined that two subjects had become involved in a physical altercation, which resulted in the injuries to two separate individuals, Blair said. A vehicle was also damaged in the incident. The investigation identified two subjects, Wiggins and Diggs as allegedly striking a male victim with a baseball bat during the encounter. Wiggins was also accused of damaging a vehicle with the bat.
A third subject, Scully, was discovered to have made attempts to interfere with the investigation by concealing or destroying evidence in the crime, Blair said.
All subjects were booked. Wiggins was released after posting a bond of $11,500. Scully was released after posting bail of $2,500. Diggs remains incarcerated with bond of $2,500. The incident is still under investigation and more arrests are expected, Blair said.
—Eddie Mayfield, 30, of Fifth Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 12:38 a.m. Saturday on the charge of disturbing the peace intoxicated.
Officers responded to a residence on Fifth Street in regard to a call of a disturbance. Officers located Mayfield standing in front of the home.
Witnesses told police that Mayfield was involved in an argument, which nearly resulted in a fight with another person who left the area before officers arrived. During the investigation, officers suspected Mayfield was intoxicated. He was jailed.
—Hope L. Delgado, 31, of Egle Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 5:28 a.m. Saturday on the charge of theft of goods.
An officer responded to a convenience store on La. 182 in regard to a shoplifter. The officer arrived and located Delgado, who was suspected of the theft inside the store. A store employee told police that Delgado entered the store, concealed several items in her purse, and was attempting to leave without paying.
The items, valued at $34.97, were retrieved from Delgado and returned to the store. Delgado was jailed.
—Nicholas A. Breaux, 37, of Family Street in Pierre Part, was arrested at 4:18 p.m. Saturday on warrants charging her with contempt of court, failure to appear for criminal trespassing, failure to appear for disturbing the peace and failure to appear for no driver’s license.
Officers located Breaux on Railroad Avenue near Fifth Street where he was arrested. Breaux was jailed.
—Byron Ogwin, 54, of Levee Road in Morgan City, was arrested at 7:47 p.m. Saturday on the charge of disturbing the peace intoxicated.
An officer responded to the area of Ditch Avenue and La. 182 in regard to a report of a person stumbling in the area. The officer located Ogwin, who matched the description provided. During an investigation, the officer suspected Ogwin to have been drinking and was believed to be intoxicated. Ogwin was jailed.
—James P. Voisin, 31, of Patton Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 2:26 a.m. Friday on the charges of improper lane usage and DWI second offense
A patrolling officer observed a vehicle on Pecos Street traveling out of its lane of travel and stopped the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle was identified as Voisin. The officer suspected Voisin to have been drinking and believed Voisin may be intoxicated. At the police department, Voisin submitted to the Intoxilyzer 5000 test, yielding a blood alcohol concentration of 0.165 grams-percent. Voisin was jailed.
St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert reported responding to 88 complaints in the parish and reported the following arrests in east St. Mary Parish:
—William Toups Jr., 28, of the 1700 block of Cross Road in Bayou Vista, was arrested at 3:49 p.m. Friday on the charges of domestic abuse-battery strangulation and domestic abuse battery-child endangerment.
A detective investigating a complaint of a domestic battery collected evidence that Toups grabbed a woman around her throat and pushed her to the ground while outside of a business in Bayou Vista.
The detective also collected evidence that Toups struck the woman repeatedly while in the presence of children during a second encounter at a residence in Amelia on the same date. Toups was located at his home and booked into parish jail with no bail set.
—Kerry A. Williams, 40, of the 200 block of Sparrow Street in Labadieville, was arrested at 1:54 a.m. Saturday on three Lafourche Parish warrants for contempt of court and three. Terrebonne Parish warrants for simple battery, domestic abuse battery, and failure to appear on the charges of driver must be licensed and crossing at other than crosswalk.
A deputy responding to a complaint of a suspicious person on U.S. 90 in Amelia made contact with Williams and located the active warrants for his arrest. Williams was jailed with bail set at $6,553.
—Jarvis Granger, 30, of the 1000 block of Joseph Street in Siracusa, was arrested at 1:20 p.m. Sunday on the charges of resisting an officer and disturbing the peace offensive words.
While assisting a subject at a home to collect the subject’s belongings, a deputy observed Granger yelling at another man inside the home. Granger refused to comply with the deputy’s orders to calm down and Granger began approaching the male subject in an aggressive manner. The deputy then detained Granger, who continued to yell profanities. Granger was booked into parish jail with no bail set.
Patterson Police Chief Patrick LaSalle reported the following arrest:
—Kirk Butler, 23, of the 300 block of Taft Street in Patterson, was arrested at midnight today on a warrant charging him with unauthorized use of an access card. No bail is set yet.
Berwick Police Chief James Richard reported no arrests.
