Police: Woman found dead of apparent suicide on La. 182 bridge

A woman was found dead this morning on the La. 182 bridge in Morgan City after she is believed to have died of an apparent suicide, Morgan City Police Chief Michael Banks said.
Police responded to a call at 3:49 a.m. today of a woman either passed out or sleeping on the sidewalk of the La. 182 bridge in Morgan City, Banks said. Officers found the woman deceased of what appeared to be suicide, the chief said.
The case was turned over to the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office, Banks said. The bridge was closed with the assistance of the Berwick Police Department to investigate the matter, he said. Acadian Ambulance was also called to the scene, Banks said.
As of this morning, Morgan City police did not have any further information on the case, Banks said.
A St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office news release this afternoon stated detectives are investigating the death of a woman whose body was found on the La. 182 bridge over the Atchafalaya River this morning.
At 4:04 am, deputies responded to a report of a female subject who appeared to be passed out on the bridge, the release stated. Deputies arrived on scene and located an unresponsive female. The St. Mary Parish Coroner was contacted and the woman was pronounced deceased, according to the release. Detectives are working to identify the woman and notify next of kin. The death is under investigation pending the outcome of the detectives’ and the coroner’s reports, the release said.
The La. 182 bridge was closed for about three hours this morning as investigators and emergency responders worked on scene, the release stated.
