Sheriff: Baldwin man reached for knife during stop

A 53-year-old Baldwin man resisted arrest and repeatedly reached for his hip where he had a knife after a St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office deputy stopped him on La. 182 for flagging down vehicles, Sheriff Mark Hebert said in a news release.
—Joseph Lumpkin, 53, of Martin Luther King Road in Baldwin, was arrested at 9:24 p.m. Monday on the charges of pedestrians soliciting rides or business prohibited, resisting a police officer with force or violence, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
A deputy working on La. 182 in Baldwin observed a subject flagging down vehicles attempting to get a ride. The deputy made contact with the subject, identified as Lumpkin. Lumpkin then began backing away as the deputy spoke with him, Hebert said.
When the deputy attempted to detain him, Lumpkin pushed the deputy and fled on foot. The deputy pursued and caught up to Lumpkin after running through several yards. During the apprehension, Lumpkin pulled away from the deputy and repeatedly reached for his own hip where a knife was clipped to his pants.
After being placed into custody, the deputy located a small amount of marijuana and two pipes used for smoking crack cocaine on Lumpkin. Lumpkin was booked into parish jail with no bail set.
Hebert reported responding to 39 complaints in the parish and reported the following arrest:
—Jarrid Westley, 27, of Big Four Corners Road in Four Corners, was arrested at 3:45 p.m. Monday for three counts of resisting an officer and on a Department of Public Safety and Corrections warrant for parole violation.
Deputies went to a home on La. 318 to locate Westley on the active warrant. While speaking with another subject at the door, a deputy heard a ruckus coming from another part of the home. The deputy ran towards the noise and observed Westley climbing out of a window to the ground, Hebert said.
The deputy ordered Westley to stop. Westley then fled on foot. The deputy pursued him through several yards. Westley then ran into the street causing several vehicles to come to a stop. The deputy caught up to Westley in a driveway. While being taken into custody, Westley attempted to pull away from the deputy, Hebert said.
Westley was booked into jail with no bail set. Additional charges are pending.
Franklin Police Chief Sabria McGuire reported the following arrest relating to east St. Mary Parish:
—Wibray Dauntain, 22, of Freret Street in Morgan City, while incarcerated at the Franklin Police Department, was booked at 11:39 a.m. Monday on Third Ward City Court warrants for failure to appear on the charges of impeding the flow of traffic and principal to theft by shoplifting. No bail is set yet.
Morgan City Police Chief James Blair reported the following arrest:
—Nyjul T. Hillebrandt, 19, of Chestnut Drive in Morgan City, was arrested at 3 p.m. Monday on a warrant for failure to appear on the charge of theft by shoplifting and on a warrant charging him with probation violation.
Officers located Hillebrandt on Federal Avenue where he was arrested on active warrants. Hillebrandt was jailed.
Berwick Police Chief James Richard reported no arrests.
Patterson Police Chief Patrick LaSalle reported no arrests.
