Sheriff: Foul play not suspected in inmate death

Foul play is not suspected in the death of a 46-year-old Franklin man who had been incarcerated at the parish jail and was found unresponsive Saturday in his bunk, St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert said in a news release.
On Saturday morning, at the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center in Centerville, a jailer conducting a count in a dorm located an unresponsive inmate in a bunk, Hebert said. Medical staff responded immediately and Acadian Ambulance was called to the location.
Despite their efforts, Clarence Clark III, 46, of Franklin, was pronounced dead by the St. Mary Parish coroner at 8 a.m. Saturday, Hebert said. As per St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office procedure, an investigation is underway pending the outcome of the coroner’s autopsy report.
No foul play is suspected at this point in the investigation, Hebert said.
Clark, a Department of Corrections prisoner, had been incarcerated since March and was serving time on a five-year sentence for second degree battery, the release stated.
