Sheriff: Inmate rushed, struck jailer

A 22-year-old Morgan City man, already incarcerated at the parish jail, was charged Friday after he rushed toward and struck a jailer, St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert said in a news release.
—Nathaniel Paul, 22, of Morgan City, was additionally charged with battery of a correctional facility employee at 8:57 a.m. Friday. A jailer was conducting a count of inmates in a dorm at the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center. The jailer made contact with Paul, one of the inmates in the dorm. During the conversation, Paul rushed towards the jailer and struck him, Hebert said. Paul was subdued and remains incarcerated.
Hebert reported responding to 137 complaints in the parish and reported the following arrests relating to east St. Mary Parish:
—Edwin Rodriguez-Torres, 38, of the 1200 block of Barrow Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 1:56 p.m. Friday on a warrant from Louisiana State Police Troop C for driving while intoxicated, vehicular negligent injuring, careless operation of a vehicle, and driver must be licensed. Rodriguez-Torres turned himself in at the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office in Morgan City. No bail is set.
—James Blevins, 43, of Amelia, was additionally charged on a warrant for simple burglary at 3:30 p.m. Friday. A deputy responded to a call of an alarm activation at a business on La. 182 in Amelia. Upon arrival, the deputy and the business owner observed a man exiting the business, Hebert said.
The man fled on foot. The deputy gave chase but was unable to apprehend the man at that time, Hebert said. A detective assigned to the case conducted an investigation and identified Blevins as the man who entered the business triggering the alarm. Blevins was located at the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center. Bail is set at $20,000.
—Chantal Ruffin, 25, of the 1400 block of James Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 3:24 p.m. Friday on a warrant for aggravated battery. Ruffin turned herself in at the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office in Franklin. The warrant stems from an investigation into a complaint of a battery. The deputy learned that Ruffin threw a metal pipe, striking a female victim on the ankle. Ruffin was released on $2,500 bail.
—Michael A. Phillips, 53, of the 700 block of Charles Street in New Iberia, was arrested at 4:17 p.m. Friday for criminal trespass. A deputy conducting a levee patrol in the Verdunville and Charenton areas made contact with Phillips who had driven a vehicle onto the property to fish, Hebert said. The deputy released Phillips on a summons to appear in court June 17.
—Donivin Mingo, 39, of the 500 block of Bowman Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 11:37 p.m. Friday on a warrant for failure to appear on the charge of possession of Schedule I drugs. During booking at the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center, a jailer located an active warrant for Mingo’s arrest. No bail is set.
—Denise A. Mason, 39, of the 1100 block of River Road in Berwick, was arrested at 11:35 a.m. Saturday on a warrant for failure to appear on the charge of possession of drug paraphernalia. A deputy made contact with Mason at her residence and learned of the active warrant for her arrest. Mason was later released on a $3,000 bail.
—Ronald J. Barrow, 61, of the 1000 block of Railroad Avenue in Morgan City, was arrested at 7:22 p.m. Saturday on a warrant for failure to appear on the charge of possession of cocaine with intent to distribute and on a warrant from probation and parole for probation violation. During booking at the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center, a jailer located the active warrants for Barrow’s arrest. No bail is set.
—Shawn M. Taylor, 36, of the 1900 block of River Road in Berwick, was arrested at 10:48 p.m. Saturday on a warrant for failure to comply with the terms and conditions of probation. A deputy patrolling the Ricohoc area made contact with Taylor and learned of the active warrant for his arrest. No bail is set.
—Luis Chaires, 21, of the 800 block of Duval Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 12:06 a.m. Sunday for open alcoholic beverage container, reckless operation of a vehicle, and no insurance.
—Jesus Olvera, 23, of the 200 block of West Side Drive in Amelia, was arrested at 12:14 a.m. Sunday for open alcoholic beverage container.
A deputy investigating a complaint of a reckless driver in the Amelia area located the suspect vehicle and initiated a traffic stop. The driver of the vehicle accelerated onto Lake Palourde Road. The deputy followed, stopping the vehicle as the driver turned onto Lenny Lane. The deputy made contact with the driver, identified as Chaires, and the passenger was identified as Olvera.
During the subsequent investigation, the deputy observed two open bottles of beer inside the vehicle. Both were released on summonses to appear in court June 17.
—Earl Deare, 31, of the 100 block of Procter Street in Jeanerette, was arrested at 11:06 p.m. Sunday on a warrant for failure to comply with the terms and conditions of probation.
A deputy was dispatched to the Berwick Police Department in reference to a subject who had an active warrant for his arrest. Bail is set at $10,000.
Patterson Police Chief Patrick LaSalle reported the following arrests:
—Sylvester Francois, 17, of the 200 block of Williams Street in Patterson, was arrested at 9:03 p.m. Sunday on the charge of remaining where forbidden. Francois was released on $307 bail.
—Camilo Garcia, 28, of the 500 block of St. Lucy Street in Patterson, was arrested at 2:03 a.m. Sunday on the charges of disturbing the peace intoxicated and open container in public. Garcia was jailed on $682 bail.
Berwick Police Chief James Richard reported the following arrest:
—Michael Gaines, 57, of Trevino Street in Berwick, was arrested at 8:45 p.m. Saturday on the charges of improper lane usage and driving under suspension. Gaines posted $1,250 bail.
St. Martin Parish Sheriff Ronnie Theriot reported the following arrest relating to east St. Mary Parish:
—Melinda Hartley, 46, of the 1000 block of Tower Tank Road in Morgan City, was arrested on the charges of two counts for possession of Schedule II narcotics.
