Sheriff: Man arrested for choking woman

A 32-year-old Morgan City man was booked Thursday on a domestic abuse charge after he choked a woman in June, St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert said in a news release.
—Dayshawn Short, 32, of the 1400 block of James Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 11:06 a.m. Thursday on a warrant for domestic abuse battery by strangulation.
A deputy located Short at the St. Mary Parish Courthouse in Franklin. In June, a deputy was dispatched to a 911 call of domestic violence that occurred at a home in Bayou Vista. During the investigation, the deputy found evidence that Short grabbed a woman by her throat and began choking her, Hebert said.
When the woman fell to the floor, Short exited the home. The victim was then able to lock herself in a bedroom and call 911, the sheriff said. Short was jailed with bail set at $2,500.
Hebert reported responding to 39 complaints and reported the following arrests:
—Vincent Coleman, 24, of the 1200 block of Josephine Street in Franklin, was arrested at 10:03 a.m. Thursday on the charge of criminal damage to property, a warrant for domestic abuse battery, theft, and resisting an officer, a warrant for disturbing the peace, a warrant for criminal trespass and resisting an officer, and Franklin Police Department warrant for aggravated obstruction of a highway, criminal damage to city property, flight from an officer, and failure to yield for emergency vehicles.
Accompanied by Franklin Police, deputies developed information that Coleman was inside a home on Easy Street in Franklin. Coleman was wanted on several warrants from the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office and Franklin Police Department.
Coleman refused deputies’ orders to exit the home, Hebert said. Deputies then received consent to search the property. While searching inside the home, a deputy located Coleman hiding under a couch. The deputy also located a knife near the suspect. Coleman admitted to the deputy that he used the knife to cut out the bottom of the sofa in order to hide from police, the sheriff said.
The warrant for Coleman on the charges of domestic abuse battery, theft and resisting an officer was issued in June following a deputy’s investigation into a 911 hang up call originating from a home on Easy Street in Franklin. When deputies arrived, they observed a male subject, identified as Coleman, exiting the rear of the home.
Coleman refused the deputy’s orders to stop and fled into the sugarcane field nearby, Hebert said. The deputy found evidence that Coleman struck a female victim in the face and arms causing a laceration to her lip and scratches and bruises to her face and neck, Hebert said.
The victim then got away from Coleman, locked herself in a bedroom, and contacted 911. The deputy also learned that Coleman stole the victim’s cell phone.
On Sept. 19, a deputy went to the home to serve the warrant for Coleman. The deputy observed Coleman sitting on the back porch. The deputy ordered Coleman to stay on the porch. Coleman then ran into the home, out the front door, through another resident’s yard, and into the nearby sugarcane field, Hebert said. The deputy then obtained a warrant for criminal trespass and resisting an officer.
The warrant for disturbing the peace was issued after a deputy responded to a report of a fight Wednesday at the home on Easy Street. The deputy collected evidence that Coleman yelled and cursed at a female victim causing a disturbance. Coleman was jailed with no bail set.
—Taylor Davis, 18, of the 2700 block of Allain Street in Jeanerette, was arrested at 2:39 p.m. Thursday for warrants for failure to appear on the charge of disturbing the peace, failure to appear on the charge of criminal damage to property, failure to appear on the charges of criminal trespassing and vagrancy, failure to appear on the charge of illegal possession of stolen things and failure to appear on the charge of unauthorized entry of an inhabited dwelling.
A deputy made contact with Davis at a business on La. 182 in Jeanerette in reference to him turning himself in. Davis was jailed with bail set.
—Desha Lutchiz, 35, of the 300 block of Cedar Street in Franklin, was arrested at 5:44 p.m. Thursday on a warrant for simple assault and disturbing the peace. A deputy made contact with Lutchiz at the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office in Franklin and located the active warrant for her arrest.
A deputy obtained the warrant following an investigation into a report of a disturbance in Centerville received on Sept. 1. The deputy gathered evidence that Lutchitz entered into the Centerville High School gym and yelled, cursed, and verbally threatened the life of a juvenile female victim, Hebert said.
The incident occurred after school hours in front of other juveniles. The deputy also found evidence that the encounter was the result of a fight between two other subjects that occurred earlier in the day. Lutchiz was released on a summons to appear in court Dec. 14.
Morgan City Police Chief James Blair reported the following arrests:
—Teligia Busby, 50, of Main St., Morgan City, was arrested at 1:09 p.m. Thursday on a warrant charging her with disturbing the peace intoxicated.
Busby was located by a patrolling officer who knew that Busby had an active warrant issued by the City Court. Busby was jailed.
—Rodney Portier, 60, of Portier Court in Morgan City, was arrested at 3:45 p.m. Thursday on a warrant charging him with hit and run driving
Portier was found to have outstanding warrants from the Morgan City Police Department stemming from a Sept. 20 accident. Portier was alleged to have been pulling a camper trailer and pulled down some wires, which damaged a house.
Berwick Police Chief James Richard reported no arrests.
Patterson Police Chief Patrick LaSalle reported no arrests.
